🐕🚨Official Animal Control Announcement from Nellie Mae and Chief Miles: 🚨

The squirrels have filed complaints. The dogs are requesting more ice water. And the pavement is basically a frying pan.

With temperatures soaring, please check on your pets and outdoor animals. Make sure they have:
🚰Plenty of fresh water
🌳 Access to shade
🏠A cool place to rest

If you wouldn't walk barefoot across the parking lot, don't ask your dog to do it either.

Nellie Mae and Chief Miles appreciate your cooperation in keeping tails wagging and paws protected! Their friends in Animal Control love interacting with the public, but not when exhausted animals are involved.☀️🐶

The CDC is urging pet owners to take extra precautions as concerns grow over the flesh-eating New World Screwworm following the first reported dog case.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the New World Screwworm is a flesh-eating parasite that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, birds, and even humans.

The parasite is not contagious and does not spread between animals or from animals to humans. But even a small cut can put a pet at risk, as the larvae can infest an open wound.

It breaks our hearts to make this announcement, but we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Mardi Gras Pawty.

Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a venue, and we simply haven’t had the community support needed to make the event possible this year.

When Pawsitive Hearts of Perry County first began, our community rallied around us in an incredible way. That support allowed us to host fun events, help animals in need, and make a real difference. We hope that spirit of support can return.

Our dream is to bring the Mardi Gras Pawty back next year, but we’ll need our community behind us to make it happen. Every share, every volunteer, every donation, every event attendee, and every adoption truly makes a difference.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to stand beside us and support our mission. We appreciate each and every one of you more than you know, and we look forward to finding new ways to help the animals we all love.

Here’s to hoping we’ll be celebrating together at the Mardi Gras Pawty next year! 💜💚💛🐾

The Fourth of July is almost here — and while we love the celebration, our dogs? Not so much.

Fireworks are one of the leading causes of lost dogs every year, and even pups who seem "totally fine" can be stressed by the noise and vibration. I’ve written about this more than once, and the advice is as important as ever:

✅ Don't bring your dog to fireworks displays, no matter how calm they usually are.
✅ Make sure their ID tags are on and secure.
✅ Set up a quiet, cozy space away from windows and exterior walls if home; or consider this a good time to go to that cabin in the woods?
✅ Learn to use counter conditioning to prevent a fearful response—loud noise = treat!
✅ Consider tools like Thundershirts, or — for dogs with serious noise phobias — talk to your vet about medication options ahead of time.

The time to plan is NOW, before the booms begin.
