Cold Weather Animal Safety Reminder ❄️🐾
As temperatures drop, animals are especially vulnerable to cold-related illness and injury. Please take a moment to ensure the animals in your care are protected.
Bring animals indoors whenever possible.
Dogs, cats, and small animals are safest inside during cold weather. Even breeds with thick coats can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite.
If animals must remain outdoors, please provide the following:
• Proper shelter:
A dry, insulated, windproof shelter that is raised off the ground and just large enough to retain body heat.
• Warm bedding:
Straw or shavings (avoid blankets, which can trap moisture and freeze).
• Fresh, unfrozen water:
Check water sources frequently and replace ice as needed.
• Adequate food:
Animals burn more calories staying warm, so additional food may be necessary.
• Protection from wind and moisture:
Position shelters away from wind and ensure animals can stay dry at all times.
Watch for signs of cold stress:
Shivering, lethargy, weakness, or seeking unusual shelter are signs an animal may be too cold and needs immediate warmth.
Cold weather is more than uncomfortable—it can be dangerous. A few small precautions can make a life-saving difference.
Let’s keep our animals safe, warm, and healthy this winter. ❤️🐾
