Our mission is to teach people about Cuniculture in today's society. Help them to understand where their food comes from, and why it's important to have animal husbandry skills along with gardening skil
ls. Our hopes are to "teach people to fish" in order to feed them.
Mesquite Grove Rabbitry, is the humble beginnings of our small farm. They were set to go to freezer camp if we were unable to accept them, almost 30 rabbits with 7 one week old kits. We spent 4 days tossing together a set up in an area until we could make a larger pen for them. Seven months later, we were given 35 tilapia and had to get their tank set up that day. We had no prep time and their area is still a work in progress. We joined several groups and learned as much as we could, and are still learning so much about rabbit and fish care. We've done our best to use recycled or free materials during our construction phases. Many thanks to everyone who donated materials or time to help. We did purchase all the materials for the feeders we made, as we knew the cuts had to be correct for the feeders to work properly. We also used some of our fence poles (from another project) for the construction of the large permanent pen. So far, it's only myself, my husband and our 3 kids (22, 17, & 11) taking care of our little farm. Our oldest is getting ready to move out and experience the world as a real adult and we're so happy for him. Our 17 yr old, almost 18, has amazing plans for his future and it may take him to another state in a year. Our 11 yr old daughter so far wants to live at home with us. We are thankful, but also know that one day, she may want to do the same as her brothers. She has learned so much about good, home grown food and how to raise it from birth to table. It's a valuable lesson in the ways that once were, and will hopefully be again. We also have 7 dogs, 2 cats, and a plethora of wildlife that hangs around.
