Last two weeks we've been busy getting every last thing off the old Wellington, CO property. We finished in Wellington on June 27th! 10 days past our orginal deadline. Really that aint too bad and the new home owners were very kind to work with us. It is such a relief to be done in Wellington. We have about 4 loads left (2 locos, a riding car, a caboose, switches, the golf cart, riding mower, and the herd of goats) left in Colorado Springs to get down here to our new Arizona home, ranch and future railroad. The new RR will be beautiful - set up for parties, gatherings, special events where people RSVP. And eventually we will have RV spots ready and maybe a caboose or two for over night stays!

Settling into our new ranch in Marana Arizona! All the horses, dogs, and rabbits are here. The goats will come when I finish building their pens! The horses are dealing with lots of bugs, dry hay (its kind of crispy compared to what they got in Colorado!), and temps in the 100s already; but are handling it all pretty well. Also, we adopted a donkey when we purchased this ranch. Meet Romeo, a 20 yr old mini jack. Will probably never use him for breeding but he's super gentle and will be a great addition to our desert lesson program! More frequent updates to come!

Kate Thomas with On Track Horsemanship soon to be serving Marana, Arizona and the surrounding Tuscon area!

Hello all of our wonderful On Track Horsemanship friends and followers, we have a big announcement to make... Some of you know we've been dreaming of moving to Arizona.... Well the time has come! We found a gorgeous property just north of Tuscon where we will establish our On Track Horsemanship community and still have hopes of traveling back up to Colorado for clinics in the future. Stay tuned as we transition into this new phase of life for all the critters and us. Thank you to our AMAZING Colorado community for the past 11 years!! It has been my pleasure helping all of you with your horsemanship through lessons, clinics, summer camps, and horse training. Keep following us for updates and adventures!!
Sincerely,
Kate Thomas, owner of On Track Horsemanship

Epic March 2021 snow storm. It dumped about 2 ft but 30mph winds with much bigger gusts created drifting bigger than we've had since living on the ranch. The paddock fence entrance gate is buried under snow. The goats had to be dug out 3 times during the day. Their 3x4x8 alfalfa bale is COMPLETELY buried as it was placed by the metal fence near the old galvanized tin shed, which is barely visible! Kody spent HOURS on the tractor to dig us out. The drive and paths to the horses are now open. The goats path is still too deep to get to with machinery. However, all of the animals did well and are all healthy and much happier with a day of sun! We are well and the animals are good. Hope everyone else did okay in this storm!! Enjoy the photo's from around the ranch...

Happy Hoppy Joe! There's a lot of herd dynamics going on in this video. Did you know in a herd of horses, there's usually one standing up at all times while the rest lay down, or roll? Its for their safety. The one standing keeps an eye out for predators even in a domesticated herd. What else do you notice from their behavior?

Groundwork: Communicating with horses in the way the horse understands language, "body language". Non-verbal communication. A dance, a bond, between horse and human.

Working at liberty (no ropes or strings attached) is my personal favorite way of spending time with horses.

Whats your favorite way to spend time with horses?

Biscuit and Gravy had a successful sleepover with the mini girls, Nova and Luna! Biscuit showing his loner spirit (even in the big herd he often wonders off by himself, though still usually within eye sight). Gravy is making friends though!

Some desensitization fun with Roxie. We turn things into a game as much as possible. It's so fun and interesting to watch their reactions to new situations. Prior to saddling we worked with approach and retreat with saddle pads and plastic bags. However, I have not let a blanket fly off her before, so this was a new experience. Plus its windy and cold, yet she stayed calm and trusted in my leadership. This is the reward of all the time and patience with training mixed with her already curious and quiet demeanor.

09/12/2020

Roxie movin out nice after a week off due to the snow storm. She loves play time and is such a willing girl! We are preparing for some arena liberty work :) She's gonna be a fun one with liberty work in a bigger pen!

08/30/2020

Herd to pasture! Zoooooom. Check out Roxie's confidence blazing past Bandit! She use to hide back until everyone else went out, now she's middle of the pack! Biscuit and Gravy seem bummed they can't boss her around anymore lol!

08/30/2020

Playing with the whole herd, including Roxie. Interesting to watch the interactions and how Roxie has moved from being bottom of the pecking order to middle of the pack. Anira and her have quiet communication but Roxie slowly challenges her every day, it's subtle but its there. Roxie has learned she can at least move the minis around now, and I think she has fun herding them sometimes! Her moving up in the pecking order has meant that she has built confidence in herself, through the training I have been doing with her. Watch her confidence explode in the next video! (She over passes Bandit to run to pasture!)

General information

Riding lessons are catered to your specific needs and desires. Confidence is gained through understanding how horses behave and how they interact with other horses. It's important to understand why horses respond the way they do, so that we can understand when and where to apply the appropriate amount of pressure to them. We know everyone has their own unique way of learning and we strive to meet people on their level of understanding for quality instruction. Summer Camps: The week long camp is a journey where students, ages 7 through 17, will learn hands-on how to lead, tie, saddle, ride and understand their horse. Participants will receive a β€œfill in the blank” work sheet each day as we go through and explain the different aspects of horsemanship. Horse training in a horse-friendly manner: We build a relationship upon trust and leadership with each horse. Once we have the horses trust, we can teach the horse an abundance of tasks. We specialize in training to create a soft, supple, and willing horse and most importantly helping you, the owner, build a stronger bond with your horse, no matter it's current training level.
