🎀WHY I FOSTER: Elissa Zoerb🎀

I foster because I hope I can help someone else find their best friend like I found mine. I started volunteering with Safe Hands shortly after I adopted my Safe Hands dog two years ago. I added foster sitting and fostering shortly after that. Seeing how much a puppy can heal and grow in just a short time is amazing. When they curl up next to you and sigh with relief it’s like they’re saying thank you. It can be a lot of work. You’ll clean up lots of dirty newspaper and puppy pads. You’ll wash blankets and toys a few times. And you’ll learn lots of good tricks to get puppies to take their medication. But the puppy snores and snuggles make it worth it.
I was, like some, initially resistant because I was worried I would want to keep all of them. It’s a risk worth taking. I’ve come close to foster failing a few. But I’m also happy to give them some love and a fenced backyard to run around in until their true family comes along. I met my dog at a Meet & Greet; and recently I had a foster at a Meet & Greet and got to see her meet her forever parents. It feels great when you know your foster has found their people.

Daisy didn’t run away when the car came down the gravel road. She ran toward it.

She and her siblings were starving, dangerously dehydrated, overheated and desperate for help. With no food, no water, no protection from the relentless summer heat, they had nothing left to lose.

Thankfully someone stopped and brought them to our Safe House for immediate, critical care. With sub Q fluids, good nutrition and medical attention the pups recovered and grew strong.

Today, Daisy and her siblings are thriving. They are waggy tails and sweet smiles as they learn to enjoy the carefree puppyhood they almost lost.

So many animals are still waiting for their chance. Summer is one of our busiest and most challenging seasons. As temperatures rise so does the number of homeless and abandoned animals who need urgent and emergency care, food and shelter.

Daisy didn’t run away when the car came down the gravel road. She ran toward it.

Safe Hands is Looking for an Onboarding Volunteer Caller!

If you love talking about animals and think helping people find their place in rescue sounds like fun, this might be the perfect role for you! Safe Hands Rescue is looking for a friendly, enthusiastic volunteer to be one of the first voices new volunteers hear when they join our family!

As an Onboarding Volunteer Caller, you'll connect with newly interested volunteers by phone — sharing what it means to be part of Safe Hands, walking them through open opportunities and expectations, and helping them find the perfect fit.

What you'll do:
• Reach out to new applicants within 48 hours of their application
• Share info about open volunteer roles, policies, and orientation
• Answer questions and help determine the best fit
• Be a warm, welcoming ambassador for Safe Hands Rescue

What we're looking for:
• Great communicator who's comfortable on the phone
• Daily email access & reliable follow-through
• Passion for animal welfare
• Prior Safe Hands volunteering and/or fostering experience is a plus — but not required!

Time Commitment: Just 1–2 calls per week (about 30–40 minutes each)

🎀💛🐾Featured Adoptable pupper!🐾💛🎀

Meet Lottie, the happiest girl on the block. Her curled waggy tail is a thing of wonder. It’s a constant reminder of her cheerful personality. Lottie’s something of a homebody; she’s content to hang out with her foster’s dog and cat, and to move on if they aren’t in the mood to play. Her excellent nose revels in every inch of her backyard and she knows it’s the place to potty. What Lottie wants most is to shower people with love and attention in the hope of receiving lots of pets and belly rubs. This cute-as-a-button, three-year-old beagle and terrier mix is discovering all the joy this new life in Minnesota holds. Could you be her forever friend? The one to help and watch her bloom? Lottie is estimated to be 3 years old and 28 lbs.

🌟Volunteer Spotlight: Anne Gosack🌟

Ann Gosack began her Safe Hands volunteer role over ten years ago when she saw the dedication of the Safe Hands team firsthand at an animal rescue fundraiser.

As a remote volunteer for Safe Hands, Ann is responsible for recording the spay and neuter information for each animal collected from fosters and veterinary providers, as well as the medical records in the rescue’s database. She also records all new adopters’ information as animals are placed in their forever homes.

As with many volunteers, Ann’s love of animals led her to eventually adopt one. While watching an intake virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, a crate with the name “Willow” caught Ann’s eye. “All I could see was a huge pair of ears. We’ve had rescue corgis for many years, and were looking for a new family member. So those ears really spoke to me,” Ann remembers. Of course, after undergoing DNA testing, Ann discovered her supposed corgi is a mix of 18 breeds, and not one of them corgi.

If you’re interested in volunteering with Safe Hands, go for it, says Ann. “There are roles to fit every schedule and interest. The beautiful stories and community are so heartwarming. Every single animal brings joy!”

💗🐾🌷HAPPY TAIL FRIDAY !!!🌷🐾💗

Trudy (now Daisy) was adopted in July of 2025

I brought Daisy home on July 7th. She’s been a sweetheart since day 1. She loves being around people, meeting and playing with new dogs, and chasing the ball until I physically can’t throw it anymore. At least 10 people at our apartment building call Daisy their dog’s best friend, and many of the smaller dog owners have told me she’s the only dog that theirs will show interest in at all.

Daisy was estimated 14 weeks old when I brought her home, she’s nearly full grown at only 32 lbs, much smaller than I expected (not complaining)! I’m awaiting results of her DNA test to get her breed breakdown. Daisy will be starting training courses this spring for more structure, though she’s a great listener and a very quick learner already.

I had to wait 10 years since my family dog passed away before I was in a position to be able to care for a new best friend, and it feels like destiny placed her in my lap. Of all the puppies I’ve helped raise in my life, she’s by far the easiest! A huge thank you to her foster family who did an amazing job building her confidence, nearly fully potty/crate training her, and approving me to give her the best life I possibly can.
