July 4th is around the corner, and for many pups, a dread of fireworks! 😱🎇
Unfortunately, more dogs are lost on July 4th than any other day of the year, as they can bolt when scared. Here are 5 tips to keep your 🐶 safe this holiday:
1) Keep your pet secure and INSIDE during any fireworks.
2) Ensure your dog is wearing a well-fitted collar with your up-to-date contact details.
3) Get the dog really tired before dark -- a long walk, swim in a pond, playing games of hide n' seek -- you want them sleepy!
4) If your pet is nervous with the bangs and pops, move to an inside part of the house, away from windows, and play music, or put on a movie. Try to have the dog settle with you nearby.
5) Begin to play sounds of fireworks to help de-sensitize-- YouTube has lots of great videos to choose from. Start with the volume low, when your dog isn't concerned, gradually increase the sound. https://youtu.be/AINzMizjDvw
If your pet has a severe phobia or you find them hiding in the bathtub during thunderstorms, please consult your veterinarian to ask if a mild sedative may help your furry friend feel less stress. 🐾
