Tomorrow is Thanksgiving! While we hope everyone eats lots of yummy food with their families, we would like to stress the importance of keeping your pets away from the dinner table.

Pancreatitis is one of the most common illnesses we treat following the holiday. This inflammation of the pancreas can be caused by ingestion of fatty foods (turkey, stuffing, ham, etc....) in both dogs AND cats. Signs of pancreatitis include vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, not eating, etc.

Treatment for pancreatitis often involves hospitalization for fluid therapy and IV medications. Treatment can be expensive, often reaching costs of $1500-$2000.

Many common Thanksgiving foods contain toxic ingredients such as onions/garlic, chocolate, etc. Keeping pets away from food areas and keeping trash secure can help prevent accidental ingestion of harmful foods, and as much as you want to share your tasty meal with your furry friend, the consequences can be severe!
