The pursuit of excellence in dog breeding necessitates prioritizing quality and investing in rigorous testing protocols. This commitment to excellence comes at a cost, as reputable breeders like myself invest heavily in hearing testing, microchipping, and DNA testing to ensure the health and well-being of our dogs.
Contrary to common misconceptions, the financial investment in responsible breeding practices is substantial, and the costs are typically reinvested into the breeding program.
Notably, this investment also encompasses additional expenses such as progesterone testing, gasoline, ultrasounds, x-rays, possible C-sections, and stud fees. Furthermore, the cost of raising and/or showing or competing with the mother can amount to thousands of dollars in itself.
Moreover, the health testing of both the male and female parents is a crucial factor in the equation, including OFA hip testing, eye exams, thyroid evaluations, heart testing, and more. The research and selection of pedigrees with a focus on genetic diversity and disease reduction also add to the overall investment.
When you inquire about the price of a dog, remember that you are not just paying for a pet – you are investing in a living being that has been carefully bred and raised with excellence in mind. The price reflects not only the time and money invested but also the dedication to producing healthy, well-tempered dogs that will thrive as beloved family members.
A recent experience with new family members of our breeding program illustrates the importance of prioritizing quality. After purchasing a dog from an irresponsible breeder, they discovered that the dog was deaf. This unfortunate outcome underscores the value of investing in a reputable breeder who prioritizes the health and well-being of their dogs. Fortunately, this family has since waited patiently for SEVERAL years and is now welcoming a new dog from our breeding program into their loving home.
