Today the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced several important accomplishments that support the agency’s mission of preserving wild horses and b***os on public range lands in an ecologically sustainable way. During Fiscal Year 2020 – which ended Sept. 30, 2020 – the BLM humanely removed 10,139 wild horses and b***os from overpopulated Herd Management Areas throughout the West. At the same time, the agency placed 6,162 animals into private care through adoptions and sales. The agency also secured contracts for seven new off-range pastures to provide humane long-term care for up to 5,000 unadopted and unsold wild horses in a cost-efficient free-roaming environment.

In support of the BLM's mission to sustainably manage wild horses and b***os, we've released a Request for Information seeking potential sources in the Eastern United States with the interest and ability to provide corral space for excess animals. Depending on the level of interest shown, the BLM plans to follow-up with a formal solicitation seeking bids for multiple off-range corrals which can hold between 200-500 wild horses and b***os.

These off-range corrals will serve as holding facilities for wild horses and b***os removed from public rangelands in the West as part of the BLM’s mission to sustainably manage herds under the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and B***os Act and other relevant legislation. Importantly, the facilities will support the agency’s wild horse and b***o adoption and sales program by serving as regional shipping and receiving points. Since wild horses and b***os can only be humanely transported a certain distance in a single day (typically no more than 10 hours), it is necessary to have a network of off-range corrals strategically located to allow for safe and humane shipment.

Facilities will be considered in the 30 states bordering and east of the Mississippi River, including: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

News Release: Court sides with Bureau of Land Management
in two cases important to wild horse and b***o management

The decisions allow for BLM’s use of important non-lethal population management tools to help control booming wild horse herds on public lands.

As of March 1, 2020, there were an estimated 95,000 wild horses and b***os roaming public lands capable of sustaining about 27,000 with enough forage and water. This overpopulation threatens the health of the herds and other wildlife as resources are over-used and degraded over time.

The decisions reaffirm the use of management tools critical to achieving the goals outlined in a recent report submitted to Congress. In the report, the BLM proposes a combination of non-lethal methods to reduce overpopulation and achieve sustainable population levels over 15-18 years.
