The November issue of LouisvilleTails will be available soon! Here is our local columnist Paula Sparrow's HERO column for November featuring the adoption of Hulk from the Shelby County No Kill Mission (Kentucky) Says Paula, "For Raley and Hulk, it was love at first sight. They took to one another immediately and spent a lot of time on the grounds getting to know each other. Raley’s application was approved and when they left the shelter together I don’t know who was wearing the biggest grin: Raley, Hulk, or me."

At first glance, Nick Raley may not seem a likely subject for a column about animal heroes. But he’s a hero to me.

Congrats to Producer/Director Libby Sherrill of Beyond the Myth FAN PAGE! Starting tomorrow, October 26th - November 2nd - you will be able to watch BTM on HULU for free! Great opportunity to view and share this great documentary on Pit Bulls and Bully breeds as well as to be educated on BSL.

Unfairly known as violent killers, Pit Bulls have suffered from negative media coverage that has lead to city-wide bans across the country. This breed-specific legislation has torn pets away from families, and killed thousands of innocent dogs.

For older individuals looking to improve their quality of life with a pet, adopting a puppy or kitten is typically not ideal. Young pets require a degree of energy and patience that an older person may not be able or willing to give. That is why an increasing number of seniors are making the choice to adopt older cats and dogs—animals who otherwise might never make it out of the shelter.

Senior pet parents tend to be healthier, happier, and more emotionally stable than those without pets.

For Americans, a pet in the White House humanizes the first family. From a first family’s point of view, perhaps having a pet around the White House makes it a little easier to adapt to life in a public fishbowl.

As this November heats up with presidential excitement, here’s a look at some of the most memorable White House pets.

Do you have compassion fatigue? Compassion fatigue is the result of working in an intense care-giving environment where more than the usual amount of compassion is required. Much like the medical, teaching, and hospice fields, animal shelter work requires an extraordinary amount of empathy and caring on a regular basis and around every turn. Even the administrative staff, which is removed from direct contact with animals, can experience compassion fatigue.

Compassion fatigue is the result of working in an intense care-giving environment--such as a shelter--where more than the usual amount of compassion is required.
