Been having such a great time training these two pups this past week. It's not easy having TWO high energy dogs in the home with fast-paced needs and these guys are definitely ready for all that you can give! πŸ˜†πŸ’•πŸΆβœ¨

Proud to be a part of this amazing group of animal rescuers, shelter volunteers and animal advocates who are dedicated to holding this city accountable for the unspeakable neglect of abused animals on our streets and in our shelters. Thank you so much to for organizing, to .tuccio for being a fearless leader and to the following political candidates who took the time to show up and listen to the seriousness of our concerns:

And as always for already putting ideas into motion.

We're often led to believe that offering a compassionate approach to managing or changing a dog's behavior somehow equals complacency. But compassion builds trust, acknowledges the dog's individual capabilities and takes their needs into account in addition to the needs of the human caregivers. THESE things are part of the key foundations that lead to good training!

It's National Puppy Day!!
One of the most important parts of puppy caregiving is providing low pressure, positive and joyful socialization experiences out in the world, or even with something novel and valuable at home. Celebrate this week with 5 month old Poppy the Lab by giving your puppy, or one in your care a brand new and well-vetted, safe opportunity to learn.

Great examples are:
- A new place to see, smell and feel under foot
- A new person to practice greeting
- A new toy or puzzle to solve. This can include new textures!
- A new trick or training game
- A new dog (or even other animal) to meet under controlled circumstances.
- A new, safe food to try (fruit and veg options can be super fun!)

*Remember to always monitor how your pup is feeling about new experiences and practice quality over quantity!

Happy adventures! βœ¨πŸΆπŸ’•πŸŒΏπŸͺ΅πŸ–️

Just like in humans, a dog's behavior will be affected by both internal and external factors, meaning both their health, homeostasis and genetics, as well as their environment and learning. All these things will affect their mood and how they respond to stress, novelty and even their general day to day. We know that when we have an allergy, feel physically uncomfortable or have an upset tummy we can get depressed or irritable and the same is true for our dogs, and when symptoms persist, behavior challenges that appear small can escalate into a real problem.

If your dog's behavior changes suddenly or seems odd, what was a small sensitivity has now become more intense, or your dog generally has ongoing challenges, always check for underlying health issues and don't be afraid to keep digging, keep observing and to ask questions. Your dog may not be giving you a hard time but genuinely having a hard time that they need your help with.

Having a super high energy puppy can sometimes feel like you're being hit by a steam roller while also being attacked by a tiny but powerful shark! While patience and remaining calm can be tough it is vital in making sure your pup does not perceive acts of conflict thus making some of these behaviors worse.
Here's an example of how to provide structure and boundaries while also showing compassion for how difficult it can sometimes be for these puppies to develop that all important self control!
