If you wait for stress signals before stepping in, you’re already too late.
By the time you see lip licking, whale eye, leaning away, or tucked tail, the dog is already uncomfortable.
Two big risks:
1. You accidentally reinforce stress behaviors.
If the dog learns:
“I lick my lips → my owner rescues me,”
those stress signals become a strategy, not just an emotion.
Next time?
They’ll go bigger if the initial signal doesn’t work.
2. The dog escalates when subtle signals no longer get relief.
The cycle becomes:
subtle signal → ignored → stronger signal → ignored → snap/growl.
This is how friendly dogs slowly become “unpredictable.”
