Critter Sitters Extraordinaire Former pet sitting company. We have closed our services. It's been a fun time, and now we're off to new adventures!

Did your cat need purrtime, TLC, and treats (or just someone for a good conversation)? Maybe your dog needed a mid-day walk, or someone to give them meds and to play ball (and give BELLYRUBS!) Some birds enjoy time out of their cage, and reptiles need to be watered. We administered medications including injections, freshened food/water, pet cleanup, offered treats, played fetch ....and did we say

Think about it, from the cats' perspective...a moment of peace

I came home from a three-day work trip to find my husband had hung "cat-level wall art" throughout our house, and honestly, I'm not even mad about it.

See, our cat Smokey has been struggling since we lost his brother Felix last month. The vet said cats grieve just like we do, and Smokey had been barely eating, hiding under the bed, just completely lost without his lifelong companion. We tried everything - new toys, different food, even playing Felix's favorite bird videos on the TV. Nothing worked.

While I was away on business, my husband apparently decided to take matters into his own hands. He went on the Tedooo app and found this amazing artist who creates custom pet portraits. But instead of hanging them at human eye level like normal people, he hung them exactly at Smokey's height throughout the house.

There's a painting of a cozy cat bed in the hallway, a beautiful fish bowl scene by his food dish, and this gorgeous piece of a cat lounging on a vintage car right here in the living room. When I walked in and saw Smokey sitting there, actually looking at the artwork like he was contemplating it, I nearly cried.

"He's been sitting by different paintings all day," my husband said sheepishly. "I thought maybe if he had something beautiful to look at from his perspective, it might help."

For the first time in weeks, Smokey purred when I pet him. He's been making rounds to each piece of art, and I swear he looks more curious and engaged than he has since Felix passed.

So yeah, I now have a house full of cat-level art gallery, and it's the most thoughtful thing anyone's ever done for our grieving boy. Sometimes love means seeing the world from someone else's eye level, even if that someone has four paws and whiskers.

Of course, it depends somewhat on the species

It's that time of year. Here's an updated chart on what to do if you find a baby bird. Thanks to the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council for scientific advice. A portion of this month's Patreon support goes to them, so thanks Patrons!

Good people are everywhere...
What wonderful thing do you do when nobody is looking?

I heard a business person on a podcast say, ‘What matters is what you do when nobody’s looking.’ He was talking about things like designing a product - making beautiful the things that nobody will see. They won’t look, but you will know.

I like that way of going through the world. I thought, instantly, ‘What did I do this morning when nobody was looking?’ And I could make my list, of clearing up the dung and putting Kevin Bacon balm on everybody’s hooves because it’s so dry and doing little brushings and rubbings and strokings. I could talk of the murmurings of love and admiration. I do a lot of that when nobody is looking.

I also sing them songs. I did that yesterday, when I was in a singing state of mind, but today was more about conversation. (The red mare would probably quote the Elvis song at me: ‘A little less conversation, a little more action.’)

I had thought of taking them out on adventures because they all need a bit of exercise and so do I and we can scramble over the rough ground together, but it was so hot, even by ten o’clock, and they were all dreaming, and I couldn’t quite do it. We might go for an evening wander instead.

So, when nobody was looking, I came to the most important of all the jobs - more important than the brushing or the murmuring or the anointing of the hooves. It is, as you can see from the photograph, the serious scratching of the red mare’s arse. I know I should politely say quarters, or bottom. But it’s not really either of those things. It is a great big magnificent unapologetic arse, and she likes to offer it to me, with some shuffling and shimmying and always with courtesy, and I know then what I must do.

The scratching goes on for many minutes. The red mare does a kind of 1960s backing-singer shoop-boop-boo-bop-bop wiggle, like she’s getting ready to do the Charleston or the Twist, in order to make sure I am hitting the right spots. I laugh and groan and cry out, ‘Is that it?!’ I’ve been doing this for over twelve years, when nobody is looking, and I still find it hilarious. (Just like I still find it adorable when they are lying down and I still find it tremendously exciting when they roll. None of those things ever fails to bring out the eleven-year-old pony girl in me.)

The business person meant some brilliant bit of design or something wonderful to build a team or some late night invention. And I am doing gold medal arse-scratching.

Well, as your granny might have said, it takes all sorts.

Happy World Donkey Day!

On World Donkey Day, we’re celebrating these quiet, powerful animals that too often go unnoticed.

Donkeys are not only smart and sensitive, they’re also deeply social and emotionally aware.

Your backup family...

Does your cat need purrtime, TLC, and treats (or just someone for a good conversation)? Maybe your dog needs a mid-day walk, or someone to give them meds and to play ball (and give BELLYRUBS!) Some birds enjoy time out of their cage, and reptiles need to be watered and fed (sometimes with very complex or unusual diets). We administer medications including injections, freshen food/water, pet cleanup, offer treats, play fetch ....and did we say BELLYRUBS? We love all species; we’ll allow birds cage-free time (if requested...by their people), water and feed reptiles (who don't normally like bellyrubs). We LOVE bunnies...and ferrets...and guinea pigs....and all manner of critters, great and small (let's not forget pet llamas, chickens, and goats, too). Critter Sitters Extraordinaire, LLC, provides pet sitting services in Longmont, Berthoud, Loveland and surrounding areas (the northern "Front Range" of Colorado). Check out our pet care tips and articles on our website.

Our goal is to be the "backup family" for our clients and their people. We care for all types of pets in their own homes, with periodic or regular daily visits and/or overnight stays while their people are away from home, whether it's at work, on vacation, or a day (or night) on the town, or on the slopes. We hope to meet your critters, and become a member of your pack, too! Specialties: TLC, "purr time", BELLYRUBS, feeding, walks and exercise (playtime) , medications, injections, sub-cu fluids
