Why trim hooves? Hooves are a very important part of our four legged friends. Keeping them properly trimmed and maintained helps keeps the rest of their body in line and allows them to move around versus overgrown hooves, which can cause lameness issues as well as an off-set gait, much like equines. If their hooves are overgrown, it can be very painful to the point they may not want to walk. When they’re extremely bad, it can take weeks or even months to fix, if it can be fixed. Overall, it’s much better to have them on a 6-8 week hood trim schedule (depending on the individual animal). This is where I can come in.
I often get an idea on how their hooves are the first session, then I will usually come back in 6 weeks to see how quick the hooves are growing. By the second session, I can give you a schedule of how often their hooves needs trimmed (sometimes they’re fast growers and needs trimmed every 4 weeks, and sometimes they’re good for 6-8 weeks). I also always check FAMACHA on every goat/sheep that way if they need dewormed, I can let you know.
