This family is crushed after losing their rescue pup when he suffocated in a cereal bag in June. Daniela Pallein writes, "My husband and I lost our 1 year old baby boy on June 14th. We were out for a short time moving some furniture into our new apartment and came home to find our sweet baby unconscious with his head in a cereal bag he had gotten into from our recycling… we had absolutely no idea that this was something that could happen.

Bumi was also a rescue and very curious/anxious. It seemed like we were constantly playing chess with him to figure out how to contain him/keep him calm without something else getting torn up or destroyed, but we never blamed him or gave up on him… slowly he got so much better with anxiety meds, patience, and training. He started to get accustomed to sleeping while we were out and we’d avoid leaving him home for more than a few hours whenever possible.

However that awful day he must have gotten spooked by a loud sound or something and started getting into things again like he used to which led him into some trouble he just couldn’t get himself out of…. we desperately wish we made it back in time or that we knew of this hazard. If we could turn back time and change everything about that day we would, but we had no idea this could happen.

Bumi was our world and as close to being our child as a pet can get, so I understand the immense pain everyone must be going through and I am so deeply sorry. I also understand the guilt and feeling that it was preventable… but we have to give ourselves grace. We couldn’t have acted differently because we didn’t know of the risk.

We are now left with this immense emptiness in our lives without our Bumi. He was our light and joy. Our soul dog…💔 It seems like our hearts will ache forever without him. We now try to educate everyone we know about this hazard to help save other pets.
I believe in doggy heaven and have received so many signs from Bumi since he died. I know we will see him again some day. They are waiting and watching over us from above. 🙏 🌈❤️

❤️Thank you for doing this and for helping to spread awareness and comfort to grieving pet parents. Many of the posts in this group, while heartbreaking, have also given me comfort and eased my guilt. It is sadly a widely unknown risk and has happened to many diligent loving pet parents. I hope that our story will help spread awareness and save more fur babies out there. ❤️🙏

Sadly, I hear this all too often from grieving pet owners - "If we could turn back time and change everything about that day we would, but we had no idea this could happen." And, that is why we need to keep spreading awareness - so many people still don't know about the risks of pet suffocation.

BIG NEWS! $10,000 MATCHING GRANT!

We are thrilled to share some incredible news — and an amazing opportunity for you to help us make a lasting difference.

Thanks to our partnership with Mobile Vet Solutions, our first FREE spay/neuter and rabies clinic was a huge success, providing life-changing care to 26 dogs and cats in just one day! This is the beginning of something much bigger: a monthly clinic dedicated to tackling pet overpopulation at its root.

An anonymous donor believes so deeply in this mission that they’re offering a $10,000 matching gift to support our Community Spay & Neuter Program. That means your donation will go twice as far — $50 becomes $100, $100 becomes $200 — and directly funds veterinary care for pets whose families can’t afford it.

Every year, millions of dogs and cats enter shelters across the country — and too many never make it out. Virginia’s shelters are overwhelmed, and euthanasia is the heartbreaking result of too many animals and not enough homes.

Spaying and neutering is the single most effective way to stop the cycle of unwanted litters, reduce shelter intake, and prevent unnecessary suffering.

But for many Virginians, cost is a major barrier — private vet services can be hundreds of dollars, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Your support allows us to offer this critical care at no cost to the families who need it most — helping them keep their beloved pets healthy and out of the shelter system.

✅ Every dollar you donate is matched — doubling your impact
✅ Monthly clinics mean continued access for low-income pet families
✅ 100% of funds go directly to free spay/neuter and rabies services
✅ You’re not just helping one pet — you’re helping prevent generations of suffering

This is our chance to create real, lasting change — one spay/neuter at a time. Join us!

APOLLO UPDATE:
Two weeks ago, Apollo was a happy go lucky dog with his whole life ahead of him. He had years left of giving nothing but joy and pleasure to his family and every dog, cat and neighbor that was lucky enough to be in his path.

That is until Officer Miller from The City Of Buffalo E District invaded his home to pass out a flier about fireworks and in one moment, killed him and broke many hearts in the process. Since then, the Police have covered this up. They have not released video. They did no investigation. They are determined to treat Apollo's death no differently than if they had squashed an ant on the street... this is the level of accountability they feel to their citizens and the most vulnerable members of the community. The news doesn't care, cause Apollo was an XL Bully and this happened in a lower income neighborhood populated with minorities, including his owners. Same as it ever was.

We feel otherwise. This is Apollo two days ago. Through hard work. we were able to arrange a forensic necropsy at Cornell University veterinary hospital to get needed answers to questions. How far away was Apollo when shot and killed? How was he positioned to the shooter? Was he stationary? We should now get conclusive and scientific answers to those questions.

In the meantime, we have also done our homework. We have Freedom of Information law requested all documentation and video from that day. We have requested all discharges of fi****ms for the entire department over the past five years. We have requested the entire disciplinary history of the shooter himself. We do need help. Going up against those in power, they will make it as hard as possible for justice to prevail. With that in mind, we need resources to get there. Our lawyer does these cases solely on a contingency basis... he does not get a penny until the client is paid. But there are expenses. We need to hire a private investigator as well as an expert. We have amazing ones that we have worked with before... they are ready to hit the ground running. All donations will be tracked and go only towards expenses associated with getting . As a 501(c) (3), all donations are tax deductible. We take great pride in doing everything the right way with full transparency. Any questions, just ask.

To my human moms & dads, this is what happens to my paws when you take me out in the scorching sun ☀️ when the pavement is so hot !

Remember I sweat through my paws, so in this heat I can’t get rid of my sweat as my paws are burning. Missing my walk won’t harm me. Please let me just relax indoors and take me out when the sun is down🐾

If you see someone walking their dog on hot pavement, ask them to take off their shoes for the remainder of their walk home. Maybe then they'll understand.

Thank you to 8 Below Husky Rescue for this valuable advice 🙏
