This fall, DPFL is hosting two workshops at Canine Center Florida in Lake City, built around the dogs who need a little extra support.

From October 24 through 26, the Reactivity Workshop digs into working with dogs who struggle on leash or behind a barrier, looking at what is actually driving that reactivity and how to build an approach around it instead of a one size fits all fix.

🐾 He Could Barely Breathe... Because Someone Had Taped His Mouth Shut. 💔

Cooper was discovered hiding beneath a wheelchair ramp in Florida with duct tape tightly wrapped around his muzzle, leaving him struggling to breathe.

A compassionate woman and her son rushed to help, carefully cutting away the tape before contacting authorities. Their quick actions may have saved his life.

According to investigators, Cooper's owner admitted to taping his mouth shut the night before.

Veterinarians later found painful scars caused by the tape, signs of malnutrition, and injuries around his neck suggesting he had been chained for a long time.

But Cooper wasn't the only victim.

When deputies searched the owner's RV, they found several other animals—including cats, birds, fish, and a duck—living in horrific conditions surrounded by garbage, insects, sewage, and overwhelming ammonia fumes.

The owner now faces multiple charges, including aggravated animal cruelty and animal neglect. Thankfully, Cooper and the other rescued animals are expected to recover.

Now, animal advocates are urging lawmakers to pass "Cooper's Law."

The proposed law would make it a felony to tape, bind, or otherwise seal an animal's mouth or airway, and permanently ban anyone convicted of such abuse from owning animals again.

Taping an animal's mouth isn't discipline—it's cruelty. It prevents them from eating, drinking, cooling themselves, or even crying out for help.

Cooper survived because someone stopped, noticed, and acted.

Not every animal gets that chance.

Every animal deserves protection before tragedy happens—not after.

304 days is a very long time to be a shelter dog without a home……… that’s almost a year being a “shelter dog”. some days you just come and hang out in the office as you feel defeated and the only family you have is your shelter family that has made you feel safe for the last 304 days since coming into their care……. That describes our boy Griffin who is an overlooked boy who unfortunately is our longest resident with no future in sight. Griffin arrived in our care as a stray with no one looking for him….. Griffin has become so very attached to shelter staff and feels like the shelter is his home. As we are grateful we make those who enter our care feel that safe it’s not suppose to be a permanent home……… We are begging everyone to share Griffin as this young boy deserves to find a family and home to call his forever. Griffin was just a year old when entering our shelter……..Griffin has done fine with every dog he has met. Griffin truly needs someone to believe in him and give him the best life of spoiling him. Griffin loves toys, knows commands, treat motivated and walks well on leash along with so much more!!! We hope this post touches someone’s heart as Griffin is so deserving of so much more than just shelter life. We need everyone to take time from your evening and share our boy Griffin. I highly encourage all owners who are struggling with their dogs, and who have aspirations of living a far greater quality of life with them, to shut out the emotional manipulation that you’re being targeted with by the force-free/positive-only cult, and do your own research.

Go compare the video evidence of balanced trainers, actually solving serious behavior issues, helping dogs be included in every day life, and *gasp* actually getting to enjoy life off-leash reliably and safely.

And then go compare the force-free/positive-only trainers promising the moon, but delivering a never ending struggle packaged in moral virtue and superficial good feels.

This stuff isn’t difficult to navigate and make sense of—IF you’re interested in what’s actually best, rather than what simply sounds and feels best.

Because what’s best, is incredibly easy to spot… if you’re actually looking for it.

It’s your call, and it’s yours and your dog’s one life together. Choose wisely.

San Antonio, Texas May 21, 2026

In one of the most emotional moments Texas animal rescuers have witnessed in years, George Strait and Norma Strait officially opened a breathtaking multi million dollar sanctuary dedicated entirely to rescuing abused, abandoned, and misunderstood pit bulls.

The new refuge, called “Strait Hearts Pit Bull Sanctuary,” sits on hundreds of acres of peaceful Texas countryside and was carefully designed to provide long term care, medical treatment, emotional rehabilitation, and loving forever homes for dogs that many people unfairly judge or overlook.

Inside the sanctuary are spacious indoor play areas, comfortable living quarters, outdoor exercise fields, advanced veterinary facilities, and trained rehabilitation teams available around the clock. Every pit bull rescued by the sanctuary will receive complete care free of charge.

Standing beside several rescued pit bulls during the emotional ribbon cutting ceremony, George Strait shared a message that brought many attendees to tears:

“Norma and I believe every dog deserves compassion and love. Too many pit bulls have been abandoned or feared simply because people misunderstand the breed. This sanctuary is our promise to the voiceless and forgotten you are safe now, you are loved, and you’ll never be alone again.”

Norma Strait also became emotional while speaking about the mission behind the sanctuary:

“These dogs are incredibly loyal, gentle, and loving when given the chance. Many come from heartbreaking situations filled with neglect and fear. We wanted to build a place where they can finally feel safe, heal emotionally, and learn to trust again. Every dog here will be treated like family.”

A Refuge Built With Love

The sanctuary includes specialized medical wings for injured and senior pit bulls, rehabilitation spaces for fearful rescue dogs, enrichment play zones, and adoption cottages created to help them transition into caring forever homes.

George and Norma have also partnered with rescue organizations and shelters across Texas to help transport pit bulls from overcrowded facilities into safe and loving care.

During the grand opening, guests watched rescued pit bulls many saved from heartbreaking abuse happily run through the fields, wag their tails, and cuddle beside the Straits. The emotional scene reminded everyone there that even the smallest act of compassion can completely change a life.
