Let's talk small animal dentistry! Just like humans, dogs and cats need routine dental care. Your pets mouth is truly a gateway to their body and overly plagued/diseased teeth can cause many problems if left untreated.

Here are some signs your pet might need a dental cleaning:
1. Bad Breath
2. Plaque build up on the surface of the teeth
3. Discomfort while eating/chewing
4. Excessive drooling
5. Swollen or inflamed gums

Getting routine dental work done by your veterinarian can help your pets live a long healthy life. If damaged or decayed teeth are left untreated they can be extremely painful and actually cause damage to your pets heart and kidneys.

Quick tips for at home care:
- Daily brushing with a pet safe toothpaste
- Offering regular chews and treats with the VOHC seal of approval

Here at Horse and Hound we believe dental health is one of the most important care steps for our pets. Our team is always here to answer any questions or concerns regarding your pets health. Call today to schedule your dog or cats next dental cleaning or dental evaluation!

Did you know, like our dogs and cats, horses also require routine dental work? For our Equine patients this is referred to as Floating!

Now, what is floating? Having your horses teeth floated means filing down sharp and uneven enamel points on their teeth. Floating your horses teeth has significant health benefits such as: correcting misalignments, preventing ulcers in their mouth, and enhancing with chewing! Not only do we float the teeth, our doctors provide a detailed oral examination, making sure there are no loose teeth, ulcers, or anything else concerning that may be going on.

Some signs that may indicate your horse needs a float might be: showing bit resistance, dropping food when they eat, weight loss, bad breath, or discomfort. It is recommended once per year to have your horses teeth floated, but this can be dependent on age, as older horses may require more dental maintenance!

✨️Fun fact: horses have Hypsodont teeth, meaning they are designed to erupt throughout their life! ✨️

The Horse and Hound team is here for all your horses needs, so give us a call to schedule your horses next dental exam! 406-333-6765

Just hopping in to share some helpful tips for keeping your pets safe this Easter weekend!

1. Easter Lilies - this plant is very toxic to our feline friends! Please make sure if you do have Lilies in your home, that they are out of reach of your cats. Exposure risk comes from the leaves, pollen, and even the water that had passed through plant!

2. Chocolate - Make sure all of your Easter candy is secured and out of reach of your cats and dogs and make sure those baskets are not left unattended.

3. Easter Grass - The plastic grass that decorates your Easter baskets can be very harmful if your furry friend ingests it!

All of us here at Horse and Hound Veterinary Service wish all of our clients and their families a wonderful Easter Holiday!

And lastly, if needed, the Pet Poison Hotline is available 24/7, if you have any concerns that your pet has eaten anything potentially harmful, please call 888-426-4435.

We are so grateful to be a part of Val's beautiful story. Her double enucleation was performed by Dr. Hunter last week and she has been doing so well in her recovery! ❤️🐾

Valkyrie's story is one of resilience and trust.

When this two-year-old cat came to us in March, she was in rough shape. We'll avoid the graphic details, so let's just say that she was blind in both eyes and in severe pain. But even in that state, she was sweet and curious. Our vet team decided her best chance would be to remove her non-functioning eyes in the hopes that would reduce her pain and improve her life. So far, it seems to be working!

Val is in foster care with one of our amazing medical fosters, and she is recovering beautifully. She has learned to navigate around her foster room, and she even jumps on and off the bed. Valkyrie loves food and cuddling up with stuffed animals. Once her stitches are removed, the foster will start introducing her to the resident animals and we suspect she will thrive with some furry companions.

We're so lucky to have an amazing medical team that can perform these life-saving, life-improving surgeries. And we're so lucky to have fosters who have the ability to nurse animals like Val back to health. In a few weeks, we'll be looking for a perfect adopter to welcome Valkyrie into their hearts and homes. We hope that luck will once again be on our side and we'll find a forever home for this little lovebug.
