๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿพ The Veteranโ€™s Dog Fair was a success! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ‰

We are incredibly proud to partner with Soldiers Best Friend! This yearโ€™s Fair was filled with inspiring stories, wagging tais, and moments that reminded us just how powerful the bond between veterans and their dogs can be. A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who came out to support, volunteer, and celebrate our veterans. Your encouragement helps make programs like this possible.

Pets can be curious, and sometimes that leads to swallowing indigestible objects, which can result in a bowel or gastrointestinal obstruction.

The treatment for bowel obstruction can vary and depends on the severity of the condition. In some cases, a blockage may pass on its own. In others, surgery may be required.

Obstructions can be severe and may even result in death, so it is important to see your veterinarian if you discover or suspect your pet swallowed something indigestible.

If you suspect your pet has some type of obstruction, please visit AVECC Peoria for 24/7 ER services or AVECC Buckeye, open 9 AM - 9 PM. You can also find your closest location by visiting our website at https://www.azervets.com/

Congratulations to Dr. Christina Grant - our Employee of the Month!

Thank you for choosing me to be Employee of the Month! I'm grateful for the team I get to spend my shifts with. When I'm not at work, I'm probably shuttling around Frankie and Pilot to various sporting activities, or nose-deep in a good book cuddled up with my other dog, Leila.

Meet Binni - our Patient of the Month!

Binni presented to AVECCC Buckeye after flinging herself off a second story loft while playing with her four-legged brothers, and presented for being painful and vocal. On exam she was not exhibiting any specific pain responses and was sent home with some pain medication and instructions to rest! Her mom says she is back to playing and running the house as normal, and has not tried to take a dive from the loft again.

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a condition commonly referred to as "bloat". This is a critical medical issue for dogs, which can be fatal if left untreated.

Bloat happens when gas or food stretches a dog's stomach. The distended stomach rotates, trapping the gas inside and blocking off the stomach's blood supply. This can develop quickly, without warning, and requires immediate medical attention.

Here are a few ways you can help prevent bloat:

๐Ÿถ Encourage your dog to eat slowly
๐Ÿถ Feed smaller controlled portions
๐Ÿถ Donโ€™t feed them right after exercise or when over-excited/panting heavily
๐Ÿถ Keep them at a healthy weight

If you suspect your dog has bloat, please find your closest AVECC location by clicking the link in our profile!

Emergency Tips for You and Your Pet!

If your pet is ever injured and unable to walk, transporting them to the emergency vet can be a challenge. Here are some tips if you need to urgently and carefully move your pet to get them medical attention:

๐Ÿš‘ Towels, blankets, bedsheets, or pet beds can double as a pet stretcher to carry and lift your pet into the car carefully.

๐Ÿš‘ If you live alone and have a large dog breed, you could invest in a wheeled pet stretcher or wagon to have on hand just in case.

๐Ÿš‘ Injured animals are more likely to bite or claw out of fear or pain, so be careful when moving your pet. For dogs, you may need to use a temporary muzzle to prevent a bite injury. For cats, it is best to approach them from behind and wrap them in a thick towel or blanket to protect yourself from biting or scratching.

๐Ÿš‘ Handle the injured animal as little as possible to prevent further injury to the pet or yourself.

๐Ÿš‘ If you can, call the emergency vet to alert them you are on the way so they can prepare for your arrival.

If you experience an emergency with your pet, contact AVECC Peoria at (602) 491-1928 for 24/7 ER or AVECC Buckeye at (602) 805-1500.

Save our contact information to easily and quickly call us in the case of an emergency.

Congratulations to Elsa - our Employee of the Month!

I have been in the field for over 10 years. I have 5 dogs and 1 cat.
I have 3 jobs. When I am not working, I like to hang out at home with my pets and shop online.
I started working at AVECCC the end of January. I have really enjoyed working with both teams, they are both great and amazing!
You can see the passion that each and every one of them has to help each patient.

These sweet kittens were rescued by Peoria Animal Control officers (featured in some older but amazing photos) in 116ยฐ temperatures and received the care and love they need from our team. A reminder that every cat deserves a chance at a healthy life - and that starts with routine veterinary visits.

Meet Junebug (and her kittens!) - our Patient of the Month!๐Ÿพ

Starting out as a stray cat on the mountain ๐ŸŒ„ Miss June Bug trusted human hands to help raise her new litter of kittens. Bringing them to her new found mom one by one over the course of 12 hours, Miss June Bug was pleased to have a safe place to lie and rest with her kittens. We first saw Miss June Bug for anorexia and nausea. Hoping some anti-nausea medication would do the trick, her owner took her home to continue caring for her babies. Unfortunately, we saw her again 2 weeks later, at the end of her nursing the kittens, with increased pain and GI symptoms. Miss June Bug stayed in the hospital for 12 hours on pain medication and IV fluids. She was being hand-fed chicken and given plenty of cuddles by the doctors and staff and was able to go home the same day. Her x-rays and bloodwork results all came back within normal limits. Her owner did a wonderful job caring for the kittens at home in Miss June Bug's absence. ๐Ÿˆ Today June Bug is eating well and gaining weight. All 5 of her kittens are healthy and working on finding their forever homes as well. All of us at AVECCC Buckeye are grateful to of had the opportunity to meet this little family and support Miss June Bug. It is true, it does take a village to raise and baby, or kittens alike.
