🧬 Science Sunday: Understanding Low Platelet Counts in Cavaliers 🧬
Did you know that around 50% of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels naturally have low platelet counts, often with larger-than-normal platelets?
This is a well-documented breed trait, not a disease. But unfortunately, it still catches many vets (and owners) off guard.
Cavaliers often show low platelet numbers on standard blood tests because their large platelets are either not detected properly by automated machines or are flagged as abnormal. This can lead to false assumptions about serious conditions like immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT).
đźš« The danger?
Some dogs have been wrongly diagnosed and given powerful immunosuppressive drugs , including steroids and cyclosporine, when they didn’t need treatment at all. These medications can do more harm than good if used unnecessarily.
đź’ˇ What should be done?
✅ If your Cavalier has a low platelet count but is otherwise healthy, don’t panic.
âś… Ask your vet to do a manual platelet count under the microscope, this gives a more accurate result.
âś… Always let your vet know this can be a normal finding in many Cavaliers.
Raising awareness about this common trait can help avoid unnecessary stress, incorrect diagnoses, and potentially harmful treatments.
