🐾📱 If Dogs Had Group Texts... 📱🐾

We can only imagine the notifications.

But if dogs had group chats, we're pretty sure there would be a lot of drama, questionable life choices, urgent neighborhood alerts, and way too many messages sent in ALL CAPS.

Thankfully, they stick to barking instead. 😂

🦟🐾 Mosquitoes Aren't Just Annoying... They're Dangerous 🐾🦟

When most people think about mosquitoes, they think about itchy bites and ruined backyard evenings. But for our pets, mosquitoes can pose a much more serious threat.

Just one mosquito bite has the potential to transmit heartworms—a potentially life-threatening parasite that can live in a pet's heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Once infected, dogs may not show signs right away, but over time heartworms can cause coughing, fatigue, breathing difficulties, heart disease, and even heart failure.

Cats aren't immune either. While heartworm disease is less common in cats, it can be much harder to diagnose and can cause serious respiratory issues or sudden illness.

Here's what makes heartworms especially sneaky: mosquitoes don't care if your pet lives indoors or outdoors. Mosquitoes regularly find their way inside homes, which means even indoor pets can be at risk.

The good news? Heartworm disease is far easier—and less expensive—to prevent than it is to treat.

Year-round heartworm prevention remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect your pet from a disease carried by one of nature's tiniest pests.

🦟 Sometimes the smallest bugs can cause the biggest problems.

🔥🐾 National Pet Fire Safety Day – July 15 🐾🔥

Did you know that July 15 is National Pet Fire Safety Day?

It's an important reminder that emergency preparedness should include every member of the family—including those with four legs, feathers, or whiskers.

One of the best ways to protect your pets is to create a pet fire evacuation plan before an emergency happens.

Here are a few simple steps to get started:

🚨 Keep leashes, harnesses, and carriers near exits
🚨 Make sure your pet's microchip and ID tags are current
🚨 Place a pet alert sticker on your home to let first responders know pets are inside
🚨 Include pet food, medications, and records in your emergency kit
🚨 Identify a safe location where your pets can stay if you need to leave your home
🚨 Practice loading pets into carriers or getting them on a leash quickly

When emergencies happen, pets often hide or become frightened, making quick action even more important.

This National Pet Fire Safety Day, take a few minutes to review your family's emergency plan and make sure your pets are included.

❤️ Because preparedness isn't just about protecting your home—it's about protecting the family members who depend on you.

🍄🐾 Fungi and Dogs: Why Is Your Dog So Obsessed With Mushrooms? 🐾🍄

Have you ever noticed your dog stopping to sniff every mushroom on a walk like they're conducting an important scientific investigation?

They're not alone.

Dogs experience the world through their noses, and mushrooms produce a surprising variety of scents that can be incredibly interesting to curious canines. In fact, some dogs are so skilled at detecting fungi that they're trained to help locate valuable truffles hidden underground!

But here's where things get tricky...

While some mushrooms are harmless, others can be highly toxic—even deadly—to dogs. The challenge is that it can be nearly impossible for pet owners to tell the difference between a safe mushroom and a dangerous one growing in the yard, at the park, or along a hiking trail.

⚠️ Signs of mushroom toxicity may include:
🍄 Vomiting
🍄 Diarrhea
🍄 Excessive Drooling
🍄 Weakness or Lethargy
🍄 Tremors or Seizures
🍄 Liver Damage in Severe Cases

Because symptoms can develop quickly, it's best to treat any mushroom ingestion as a potential emergency.

⛑️ The safest approach?

🐾 Regularly inspect your yard after rain.
🐾 Remove wild mushrooms as soon as they appear.
🐾 Keep dogs leashed in areas where mushrooms are growing.
🐾 Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your dog has eaten a mushroom.

Fun Fact: Scientists estimate there may be over 100,000 species of fungi on Earth—and dogs would probably like to sniff every single one of them.

Your dog may think mushrooms are fascinating. We think they're best admired from a distance. 🍄❤️

🍔🐾 Summer BBQ Safety for Pets 🐾🌭

Backyard BBQs are a summer favorite, but many common cookout foods and party items can be risky for pets.

Before you fire up the grill, keep these pet safety tips in mind:

🌽 Skip the table scraps. Fatty meats, bones, corn cobs, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, and desserts made with xylitol can all be dangerous for pets.

🔥 Keep pets away from the grill. Hot grills, skewers, charcoal, grease drippings, and lighter fluid can cause burns, stomach upset, or serious injury.

🗑️ Secure the trash. Leftover bones, food wrappers, foil, skewers, and corn cobs can be tempting but may lead to choking, intestinal blockages, or emergency surgery.

💧 Provide shade and fresh water. Pets can overheat quickly during outdoor gatherings, especially on hot or humid days.

🚪 Watch doors and gates. With guests coming and going, pets may slip out unnoticed. Make sure collars, ID tags, and microchip information are up to date.

A little planning can help keep your pet safe while the humans enjoy the burgers, sunshine, and summer fun.

If your pet eats something they shouldn’t, gets injured, or shows signs of illness after a BBQ, contact us immediately.

👀🐾 Do Pets Really See in Black and White? 🐾👀It's one of the most common myths about our furry friends—but it's not true!...

👀🐾 Do Pets Really See in Black and White? 🐾👀

It's one of the most common myths about our furry friends—but it's not true!

Dogs and cats do not see the world in black and white. They actually see some colors, just not the same way we do.

Think of it like this:

🎨 Humans see a full rainbow of colors.

🎨 Dogs see a more limited palette, mostly shades of blue, yellow, and gray.

🎨 Reds, oranges, and greens often appear more muted or may blend together.

For example, that bright red ball your dog loves? To them, it may look more like a dull brownish-gray against green grass. A blue toy, however, is much easier for them to spot!

Cats have a similar color range but excel in other ways. Their eyes are specially designed to detect movement and see in low light, making them excellent twilight hunters.

🌙 Fun Fact: Cats only need about one-sixth the amount of light that humans do to see effectively at night!

So while your pet may not appreciate the vibrant colors of a sunset, they're seeing things we often miss—tiny movements, subtle shadows, and activity in dim lighting.

The next time your dog zooms straight to a blue toy or your cat notices something moving before you do, remember: they're not seeing less than we are... they're just seeing the world differently.

🐶🐱 Different eyes. Different superpowers.

🎆🐾 Fireworks Are Over... How Did Your Pet Do? 🐾🎆

Give your pet a score from 1 to 5:

⭐ 1: Slept through the fireworks like a champ.

⭐⭐ 2: Noticed the noise but stayed mostly relaxed.

⭐⭐⭐ 3: A little nervous, but recovered quickly.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4: Very anxious, pacing, hiding, or seeking constant reassurance.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5: Extremely stressed, shaking, panting, vocalizing, or struggling long after the fireworks ended.

If your pet scored a 4 or 5, they may still be experiencing lingering anxiety even though the celebrations are over.

The good news? There are ways to help. Maintaining a predictable routine, providing enrichment, creating safe spaces, and addressing anxiety early can make a big difference.

If your pet struggled this holiday weekend, don't wait until the next fireworks season. Contact us to discuss strategies that can help your pet feel calmer and more comfortable during future stressful events.

🐶🐱 Every pet deserves to feel safe, even when the world gets a little noisy.

While we're busy enjoying cookouts, fireworks, and red, white, and blue celebrations, many pets are preparing for what can be one of the most stressful nights of the year.

In fact, more pets go missing around the 4th of July than almost any other time of year due to loud noises and fireworks.

Before the festivities begin:

🎆 Keep pets safely indoors

🏷️ Make sure ID tags are secure and microchip information is current

🦴 Create a quiet space with their favorite toys, treats, or bedding

🚪 Double-check gates, doors, and fences before guests arrive

A little planning can go a long way toward keeping your furry family members safe, calm, and comfortable throughout the holiday.

Helping Your Pet Stay Safe & Cool This Summer ☀️

Summer brings fun outdoor adventures, but heat can be dangerous for our pets. Dogs and cats are more sensitive to heat than we are. Heat-related emergencies can happen quickly.

Here are some simple tips to help:

🐾 Walk during cooler mornings or evenings.

🐾 Bring fresh water on outings. Encourage your pet to drink often.

🐾 Avoid hot pavement that can burn delicate paw pads.

🐾 Never leave your pet alone in a parked car.

🐾 Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: excessive panting, drooling, weakness, vomiting, trouble breathing, or collapse.

Use the 7-Second Test: Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your pet's paws.

Some pets are at higher risk, like brachycephalic breeds, seniors, overweight pets, and those with heart or breathing issues.

If you see signs like panting, drooling, or weakness, move your pet to a cool spot and contact us right away. Heat emergencies can become serious in minutes.

Have questions about keeping your pet safe this summer? We're here to help! Contact us to learn more about heat safety for your furry family members.
