Bella & I went Belton tonight to meet a lady from Gladstone with baby squirrel. I'm the only rehabber that answers 24 hours. My first this year finally! He was severely dehydrated, so hydrated him right away. Then had to go to 3 different stores looking for goats milk since the pet stores were closed already. I didn't know target doesn't even sell that much food. So finally at closing time, found it in the health food section powdered at hyvee. He ate good!! He has a very good chance. Eyes are open so he's probably about 5 weeks old. Bella was curious.

I DO NOT TAKE DOGS OR CATS! I Am not a vet!
Great! I got a call from a frantic woman just now. These people called and said they were vets and had her dog that was missing for a year & it's injured and they need to do emergency surgery. They wanted her bank or cc info & said it was me, GIDDYUP horse rescue & gave my address. She didn't & called the sheriff and me just to make sure. They're more than likely scrolling lost & found pages and getting info. She had them send a photo of her dog, but it was the one she had posted. I'm so sick of these scams & people!! I'm gonna press charges if they catch them. The sheriff called me and is doing a formal report for me in case caught. The detectives will take over.

My poor ewe, April, fell on the ice 4 days ago. I couldn't get her up so put her in wagon & got her to barn. Her front legs were spraddled. I thought she would make it as was sitting up, eating & drinking, but last night on her side and eyes glazed. I wanted to make her a sling to raise her, but didn't have help. I held her til she passed. Rip April! I'll have to find another now so Gretta won't be alone.

I commented on a post about a person or people keeping opposums as pets. I'm astounded at how many illiterate people think it's ok to do because they are safe. Wildlife is for the wild, period. They are not meant for our pleasure to keep confined inside. You are being selfish by doing so. Also it is illegal to keep them. What happens when the conservation dept finds out? They take them. Then what? You've tamed it so now most can't be returned to the wild, so they euthanize them. So you've basically taken it's life by thinking you saved it. If there is not a rehabber for a species you find,learn how but raise them and love as babies, and when weaned, do not handle any longer. Teach them to find food, dig or break open eggs. Then in fall, release them back to the wild. Knowing they are in their own habitat. You can still leave food out for them. Just admire from afar! I have 3 fat opposums that escaped their cage here before I released. Those little hands opened the latch. So they live under my house. I leave berries, veggies, cat food, eggs, and sometimes mini Mallows or a cookie on back porch and I watch them from inside.

With the bitter cold coming, here's some info on what to do if you find hypothermic wildlife...

If the animal is frozen to the ground DO NOT pull them off... slowly pour lukewarm water around them. Once free, secure the animal and provide warm, dry bedding.

To secure the animal: wear thick gloves, prepare a kennel or ventilated box or tote, corral the animal into the box or toss a blanket over the animal and gently scoop them up.

Move them to a warm and quiet environment away from pets and children.

DO NOT immerse in water.

DO NOT offer water or food. They need to get their body temp back up to normal stasis before they'll be able to properly digest.
