🚨LINCOLN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER — CAT INTAKE POLICY 🚨
The Lincoln County Animal Shelter serves as a safety net for cats in our community that are at risk, injured, or in need of immediate care. Due to limited staffing and resources, we must prioritize intake for cats in urgent circumstances. This policy ensures that our shelter space is reserved for animal control and animals with the greatest need.
The Lincoln County Animal Shelter follows the Association of Shelter Veterinarians’ Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.
ACCEPTED INTAKES
1. Injured, Sick, or At-Risk Cats
○ Stray cats that are visibly injured or in immediate danger.
○ Kittens under 8 weeks of age that are clearly orphaned.
○ Cats that are victims of cruelty, neglect, or abandonment (as determined by animal control).
2. Stray Cats in Distress
○ Stray cats that are not thriving outdoors (e.g., thin, ill, injured, unable to care for themselves).
○ Cats in unsafe or hostile environments where their welfare is compromised.
3. Owner Surrenders (By Appointment Only)
○ Owner surrenders must be scheduled in advance and approved by the intake team. The decision to take in surrenders will be based on the availability of shelter space and the capacity of staff to care for all of the animals.
○ Intake appointments will be made based on shelter capacity and urgency of the situation. Owners will be required to pay the surrender fee of $20/animal.
NOT ACCEPTED
● Thriving Stray Cats
○ Healthy, adult cats that are thriving outdoors will not be admitted.
○ These cats are often well adapted to their environment and may be community cats or free-roaming pets.
○ Community members are encouraged to return such cats to where they were found.
● Unscheduled Owner Surrenders
