Hi everyone,
There is some construction work outside our office, and our sidewalks are getting redone. Tomorrow (Friday), they will be tearing up the sidewalk in front of our entrance. We will still be open normal business hours from 8am-12pm. If you plan on stopping by, please call the clinic when you arrive and we can direct you around back to our back entrance to help you. Thanks for the understanding and sorry for an inconveniences.

Hi Friends,
Happy May! We hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the nice weather. As we start to get into the summer months, more of our beloved companions start to flare with allergies, and this can negatively affect their ocular health. The immune system drives allergies. The immune system also triggers some eye diseases. Consequently, it is common to have eye disease and allergies flaring at the same time. If you are concerned your furry friend might be experiencing eye issues or discomfort, give our office a call! Our team would be more than happy to help. Also, when it is time to throw your medications away (no longer needed), think about dropping them off at / mailing them to the clinic instead. We donate used medications to many shelters.

Hello everyone! We have an extra case of ZD canned cat food (minus one can - picky eaters!) that we are not going to use and would like to donate to a good home. Would anyone be interested? Pick up at the clinic any time during business hours, just let us know!

Hey friends,

I wish to thank all of you for the very kind comments regarding the first post. As many of you know, I do not utilize FB on a regular basis (as in I last checked my personal page pre-COVID??). It was fun to read the comments of people I have not seen in a long time (like the radiologist I used to work with 15 years ago - Hi Dr. Shaiken!).

Medical terminology lesson:

Brachycephalic (Boston, Pug, Shih Tzu, Lhasa, Bulldog, Boxer) - having a broad, short skull shorter than length, often markedly so

Mesocephalic (Beagle, Viszla, Brittany Spaniel) - having a head shape of medium, balanced width / length proportions

Doliocephalic (Whippet, Borzoi, Collie, Scottish Deerhound) - relatively long skull with width less than length

Brachycephalics compose roughly 50% of our canine patients. I fondly refer to them as bug-eyed dogs. They are adorable, loving breeds which do often have multiple ocular surface diseases. I often will say there is a reason the fox, the wolf, and the coyote do not have the anatomy of the Pug, the French Bulldog, and the Shih Tzu. These breeds do not have eyes that would make it on their own in the wild as the eyeball has become too exposed. Attached is an example of the human influence on the genetics of skulls of different breeds over the last century. It is rather dramatic! Breathing will be negatively impacted by these structural changes (brachycephalic) as well.

The brachycephalic anatomy predisposes the patient to serious eye conditions: corneal ulcers, exposure problems, and corneal pigment build up. Many of these breeds are additionally at elevated risk of dry eye and surface immune diseases. Brachycephalics (and don’t forget the English Bulldog fits into this category!) are encouraged to have thorough annual exams given their high risk of smoldering concerns. Also, if your brachycephalic dog is squinting, tearing, and/or rubbing for even just 48 hours, you should be touching base. Problematic diseases do also progress more rapidly in these breeds.

Here’s to hoping March gets here soon.
Best,
Susan Keil

Hello everyone! My staff has been encouraging me to make the occasional post. Keil Veterinary Ophthalmology is ready to help with any eye problems your pet is experiencing. KVO is a non-corporate, privately owned clinic. We prefer to chat with you directly - phone calls are preferred. We pride ourselves in excellent, compassionate service, whether your pet is small or large (yes, horses visit the clinic).

I opened KVO January of 2012. I am a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist, practicing for over 30 years. I now joke the good thing about wearing readers is being able to tell your clients "yes, I really have seen almost everything". I am proud of the exceptionally thorough, detailed management of our patients. You will love the KVO team! Truly, they are wonderful.

If you know someone who has a pet dealing with eye problems, suggest they give us a buzz. If you own a brachycephalic breed (bug-eyed dog), I encourage annual exams with an ophthalmologist to promote life long healthy eyes. Our consultation includes a detailed eye exam, including tonometry (checking eye pressures), measurement of aqueous tear value, and fluoroescein corneal staining (evaluates for ulcers).
