We (Renee of whimsycats.com, my husband and I) met the gifted Simon Tofield of Simon's Cat fame on Sunday. He is so incredibly intuitive to his cats' behaviors and nuances - clearly made evident in his hilarious books and online videos! Listening to him talk about his cats and watching him draw his various Simon's Cats characters (including the lovely Daisy the hedgehog, who is the only character with a name!) as well as his own 4 cats, was very entertaining and inspiring. It made me want to go home and study my cats' behaviors even more! The cartoons that he drew during the signing/presentation, are then signed by Simon and given to animal charities to auction to help raise funds!

TICKS! They're still out there even though it has become colder :-( Essential oil tip for dogs when you have removed the tick, apply a drop of tea tree oil to the bite. It has great antibacterial properties and will help to dry out the bite!

It's time to "Stuff the Truck" for Loudoun Pet Pantry again! Save the date for next Saturday 11/9 from 12:30pm-3:30pm at the Pet Valu in Ashburn. Donations can also always be dropped off at our shelter in Waterford. The Loudoun Pet Pantry is a partnership betwen, LCAS, Humane Society of Loudoun County, and Loudoun Interfaith Relief to provide pet food to families in need. "I highly recommend Rhona's talents for working with dogs! She spent lots of time working with my dog to identify which essential oils he needed to help with his anxiety issues and she immediately identified some pain points through her healing touch therapy. She was patient and caring throughout the process and my dog was extremely quiet with her and slept for hours after she left.

I wish I had a better story to share as the outcome was not at all what Rhona and I had hoped for, but I have to commend her for the time and effort she put forth to try to help my dog. He was a re-home that had been raised as a puppy on prozac. I had him for almost two years and while he was a fabulous dog most of the time, he was extremely destructive and had major anxiety issues whenever I left my house. He had gotten better at one point, but started to spiral out of control right at the time that I met Rhona. She spent several hours with him on her initial visit, trying to identify the best essential oils for his issues, he loved her quiet demeanor. She also found pain points through her healing touch and thought his back pain may be related to the Prozac damaging his liver so after leaving my house she did extra research and sent me the information she found by email. She visited us again and he responded well, her patience was wonderful. On this trip, she took a picture of him and sent it to a friend of hers to see if she would be able to communicate with him, all of this was on her own time. While in the end, I had to put my dog to sleep to end his ongoing agony, Rhona was a ray of sunshine and hope, I only wish I had found her sooner and maybe my story would have had a different outcome."

Federal health officials are warning pet owners to be cautious about feeding their dogs jerky treats as they continue to investigate a treat-related illnesses that has left nearly 600 dogs dead and sickened more than 3,000 others.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued an alert to consumers about the illnesses and deaths tied to jerky treats from China. Officials say the exact cause of the illnesses remains unknown.

The agency has received reports from pet owners and veterinarians about jerky pet treat-related illnesses affecting 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. since 2007. Approximately 580 of those pets have died, according to a news release.

The FDA noted a decrease in reports of illnesses earlier this year after a number of pet jerky treats were pulled from the market. Officials say the number of reports may have declined because fewer jerky treats were available to consumers.

Symptoms observed within hours of eating the treats include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased activity, increased water consumption and increased urination, the agency said. Severe cases have involved kidney failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, the FDA said.

The agency urges owners of pets showing symptoms to consult a veterinarian and save any remaining treats and treat packaging for possible testing.

For the next week or so, I will be posting a Fall poison-a-day information sheet. With Fall, comes many toxins/poisons that can make your pet severely ill or kill them. It is very important to be aware of the hazards out there! A lot of this information is taken from the ASPCA website. Regarding this first post, I have sadly (as a vet. tech.) seen a number of animals, mostly cats, die from antifreeze poisoning. It is a terrible way for you, as an owner, to lose a pet, and for an animal to lose its life, when it can so very easily be prevented.
