If your pet is dealing with spinal pain, here are a few quick tips from our Richmond Neurologist Dr. Higginbotham on how to properly pick them up:

One of the most distressing things that we hear from owners that have pets with spinal pain is that they are afraid to actually pick their pets up. This is understandable because not only can it cause the pet pain if done incorrectly, but it can also cause a great deal of anxiety.

The most important thing is to keep the spine as level (parallel) to the ground as possible. Generally, we recommend petting the animal several times to ensure they are calm and then slipping a hand under the sternum and between the forelimbs. The other hand should be used to support the abdomen/rear limbs and the whole animal picked up gently at one time.

It is very important to avoid picking an animal up by the "armpits" as this can be uncomfortable and scary. Properly picking up and lowering animals with spinal pain ensures that you can consistently avoid stairs, jumping on furniture, and other situations in which they may injure themselves.

Thanks, Dr. Higginbotham! 👍

Thanksgiving is almost here! While we’re excited about the delicious feast, it’s important to understand which foods are toxic to our pets.

Keep cats and dogs away from:
✔️ Stuffing – as it may contain onions or garlic
✔️ Ham and Turkey – can cause pancreatitis, upset stomach, or diarrhea
✔️ Turkey Bones – splinters may cause indigestion or bowel obstruction
✔️ Mashed Potatoes – may have been prepared with butter and milk
✔️ Salads with Grapes/Raisins – can cause kidney failure
✔️ Chocolate Desserts – toxic to both cats and dogs

If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic this holiday, contact your veterinarian immediately.

For more information about keeping your pets safe this Thanksgiving, visit this helpful resource from our friends at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA): https://bit.ly/3qL0MF0

This week we celebrate ! This week is set aside to recognize and celebrate these important team members who perform a vital role in the health and well-being of our pets. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to recognize technicians’ tremendous contributions at BVNS and in the veterinary community.

Here just a few facts you may not know about the veterinary technician role (it would be impossible to list them all!):

☑️ Veterinary technicians handle many of the same responsibilities that nurses and other professionals perform for physicians in human medicine. Like veterinarians, veterinary technicians are trained to work with several species of animals.

☑️ Veterinary technicians are trained to: take and record vital signs, obtain and record patient case histories, perform laboratory tests, take and develop radiographs (x-rays), draw blood, collect stool samples, sterilize equipment and exam rooms, administer medications, injections, IV fluids and anesthesia, assist in dental cleanings, remove sutures, clean wounds, and change dressings.

☑️ In addition to direct contact with patients, veterinary technicians also work closely with our clients to communicate patient history, vital signs, test results, at-home care instructions, and much more!

We are so proud of our incredible team of veterinary technicians here at BVNS. Thank you for all of the tremendous work that you do! 💙

Coming to BVNS for your first visit? 🐾 Here’s what you can expect:

Once you and your pet are comfortable, our team will take a medical history along with your pet's vital signs and we will perform a thorough neurologic exam. When this examination is complete, we will discuss with you the possible causes of your pet's symptoms, along with treatment options and likely outcomes.

Following the completion of any recommended testing, a treatment plan can begin. When your pet is ready to go home, we will discuss their recovery, medications and all other elements of their care with you. A copy of this information is also provided in writing to you and your veterinarian.

Before you leave, our staff will answer any and all questions you have.

Pets may have noticeable seizures causing their bodies to convulse. They may also exhibit more subtle signs such as facial tremors, sudden movements, or unusual barking.

Here are the action steps you should take if you think your dog is having a seizure:

🔹Stay calm to help keep your pet at ease.
🔹Track the length of the seizure and note symptoms. Video footage of the episode may be helpful to your pet's medical team.
🔹Do not attempt to restrain or stop the seizure. Keep away from the mouth.
🔹Always call your veterinarian after an occurrence.

If seizure lasts for 4-5 minutes or longer or if your dog has more than one seizure in a 24-hour period, this requires immediate medical attention so contact us right away.

The Subcortical Surgery Group (SSG) is a collective of neurosurgeons that meet annually in Boulder, Colorado to present current data, case series and learning opportunities for intracranial surgery.

This year, our Richmond Neurologist Dr Young presented on "Can proximity of Excitation Light Improve Tumor Visualization". Focusing on a highlight of a case series developed over the past two years, the team evaluated tumor visualization in 18 patients with primary brain tumors, resulting in significant improvement in visualization of tumor resection.
The tumor will glow a bright yellow green, while the normal tissue will appear blue due to the specific wavelength of the light used. At BVNS, we will continue to expand our use of tumor fluorescence, intraoperative ultrasound, and surgical aspiration to maximize our experience and expertise that allows us to provide complete neurology care.

Do you know what a board-certified veterinary neurologist is?

Board certified neurologists are specialists who focus on diagnosing and treating diseases of the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. In addition to completing undergraduate training and four years of veterinary school, board certified neurologists complete an internship and residency in their specialized field, an additional three to five years of training. This is followed by a rigorous examination from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM).

Passing this examination grants the status of Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (DACVIM), with the area of concentration placed in parenthesis after that title: DACVIM (Neurology).

Meet Mystery!

Mystery was found by Richmond Animal Care and Control nearly unresponsive. She couldn't stand or pick up her head. She was taken to Virginia Veterinary Centers in Richmond where it was discovered she had a skull fracture and then was transferred to BVNS for further evaluation once she was stabilized.

MRI allowed us to visualize the damage to her brain as well as have a better idea about the nature of the fracture. Dr. Trub and Dr. Young performed surgery to remove the pieces of the fractured skull that were pushing down against her brain.

Since then, Mystery has greatly improved. She is learning how to be a puppy again and was able to join her new family in her forever home last week! 💙

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain that is usually accompanied by uncontrollable jerking movements of limbs, reduced level/loss of consciousness and sometimes involuntary urination/defecation.

Also known as epilepsy, seizures are one of the most common neurologic conditions in dogs.

Most last between 30 seconds and two minutes. A seizure that lasts more than 5 minutes is considered a veterinary emergency so seek medical attention immediately.

If your pet experiences a neurologic emergency or you need to schedule an appointment with our neurology department, feel free to contact us:

Meet Gus! 🐾

This sweet boy presented to BVNS Woodstock in January 2022. He was reluctant to walk, had muscle spasms, and was experiencing a lot of pain overall. Dr. Neary was able to localize Gus’s pain to his cervical spine - which is the neck region of the spinal column. An MRI was performed and revealed cervical spine intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) that was causing moderate spinal cord compression.

That very same day, Dr. Neary was able to provide surgical decompression for Gus via a ventral slot. A ventral slot is a surgery where a hole centered on an intervertebral disc space is cut to access the bottom of the spinal canal, enabling the removal of material that is compressing the spinal cord and causing discomfort. Gus was hospitalized post-surgery and was able to be discharged the next day.

The first picture shows him right after surgery, holding his head up and already feeling much more comfortable. The second picture shows Gus after his recovery, happily displaying one of his favorite Frenchie yoga poses! 💙
