Just how do you communicate with your pet? I mean, really understand what they are trying to tell you?

One of the first things that we need to do is to settle down. We just need to take a breath...it always starts with a breath. Just take a breath. Breathe in. Feel your feet on the ground and just relax, and then be open to the possibility of what your animal just might be thinking.

Now in the beginning when you try this. That might be a little strange. And you may not get anything at all. But as you practice being open to your animals, then the more you'll get something in return.

This week, try listening to your pet. Take a deep breath and be open to what they are thinking. Let me know what your experience is. I would love to hear what you experienced and see if there are any tips I can give you.

Have you ever seen a frog jumping contest? These fun froggy competitions might happen more often than you think. We can thank Mark Twain for today’s holiday which originated from his fictional account of a frog betting contest between two men on whose frog could jump the highest.

Animals give us cues with their body. They can approach us with a wagging tail, whining, or being excited when we first approach them. Usually that means our animals are happy to see us.

But what happens when as you walk in the door and you find that a rug, or piece of furniture is destroyed or your dog/cat has eliminated on the floor? You most likely will get mad or upset (which is normal). Your animal is giving you a cue.

What you need to do is start by asking why did this happen and see things from your pet's perspective. Are they getting enough exercise? Do they have enough mental stimulation? Do they have a medical issue going on?

Have you came home to a similar cue? Let's hear your story.

It's Mother Ocean Day! Protecting the ocean is crucial because not only is it a home to many marine species - many of which we have yet to discover - it also products over half of the world's oxygen! There are so many more reasons as to why we need the ocean.

Pay homage to our ocean by cleaning up after ourselves and picking up trash when we see them to prevent them from entering the marine life.

As an Animal Communicator, I act as the bridge between the human and the pet when it comes to their relationship - helping the bonds grow stronger and helping with any issues that might arise, like unwanted behaviors.

One cat I knew of, insisted on clawing up my client's rug. When I asked the cat why, the cat relayed that they enjoyed the sensation of clawing this particular rug. I asked the cat if there was an alternative they would rather claw and scratch at. With that information, we worked on finding a solution with a different type of scratching post. This satisfied both the cat and the client and help strengthen their relationship.

For us as humans, and as pet owners, we need to be open and aware, to what your animals might be thinking, and might want. This takes a lot of awareness on our part, and it does take some practice for us - especially when we have a stressful day,. We may not be as open as we want to be and may not be able to slow down as much as we want to. And ultimately, we wind up missing some cues that our animals might be giving might be giving us.

Do you take some quite, quality time with your pet and listen to them?

During this Be Kind To Animals Week, please remember that animals are thinking, feeling, sentient beings with their own opinions about the world around them in the bodies they have. They are more than the sum of their physical parts. They have intelligence, and they make associations. Referring to them as “just a” completely dismisses the rest of who they are as beings. It’s important to regard animals as fellow beings. We all have the same or similar emotional body, mental and even spiritual body (yes I said spiritual!). It should be of no surprise to anyone that our animals get mad, they get sad, their bodies hold tension and trauma, much like we do. In that regard - they are due the same amount of compassion, honor, dignity and respect as we do.

Communicating with an animal is more than just verbal command or basic training. A lot of communication is based off of feelings. The way the animal feels about something, and also the way the person feels about something.

You need to think about their perspective, how do they feel about, a given subject. What we need to remember, and realize is that animals are thinking, feeling sentient beings who have their own opinions about the world around them. And we need to appreciate that. Or at least, honor that.

Have you ever thought about this before or is this a new concept for you?

All my life, I have always loved animals - especially horses and dogs. I wanted to deepen my connection with the animals, and in 2007, I began training with Janet Dobbs to become an Animal Communicator. In October 2010, I continued my training with the Advanced II Interspecies Counselor's Course taught by Penelope Smith. Then, in June 2012, I took the Advanced III Apprenticeship class, also with Penelope Smith.

I have communicated with a wide spectrum of animals both living and departed since then. My love of animals gives me the compassion to be an Animal Communicator and relay the needs of beloved pets to their owners.

Has your love for pets been in your life a long time like me? What is your favorite pet?

People often talk about how they want to learn more about animal behavior or animal communication. They say things like “What the heck are you thinking??” or “Can you please stop destroying the house!” They look for trainers, and they feel that they can get more out of their animal, if they use more training.

But the thing is with animal communication, and animal behavior, there's a lot more to it than just a verbal command or basic training. The thing that people need to remember is that a lot of communication is based off of feelings. The way the animal feels about something, and also the way the person feels about something.

How well do you and your pet communicate? Has there been a particular incident where you understood your pet was trying to tell you something? Let's hear your story!

I had a wonderful session with Holli this morning, as I am looking to understand what our little geriatric pug, Bogie, is feeling and thinking. He's 15 years old now and he has been afflicted with some illnesses that are a bit difficult to treat. The illnesses are not life-threatening, which is a relief, but I wanted to confirm what the neurologist and I believe. We believe that Bogie has a good quality of life, though we question MY quality of life at times as I worry about our little pug.

Holli put my mind at ease during our intuitive animal communication session. I got to learn about what our little guy needs the most from me now, to support and love him in these, his twilight years. Holli gave me some practical strategies that I will be trying out over the next few days, as we also look to alternative treatments for Bogie, including potentially acupuncture and herbs. She helped him see that he would feel cool and calm from those treatments.

Thank you, Holli, for your expertise, love and support on this journey with Bogie and me. I look forward to our follow up session soon and for finding the best relief for our little guy and me!
