Time to celebrate the non-human primates of the world!

Did you know that Monkey Day actually started out as a joke? Back in 2000, Casey Sorrow was an art student at Michigan State University, and he ended up writing “Monkey Day” on his friend’s calendar as a prank. It then gained popularity with other college students and then it gained world-wide popularity! The great news out of this, Casey Sorrow is still an advocate of primate welfare.

With the holidays here, poinsettias are all around. If you have a poinsettia in your house or even outside on your porch, please be aware that they are mildly poisonous to cats and dogs. Mildly poisonous means vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea, but sick is sick and you do not want a sick animal during the holidays!

Our relationship with animals goes beyond training, feeding them and providing for their basic needs. When we decide to bring an animal into our house, whether it's a cat or a dog or a parrot or anything else, we need to see them as fellow beings. Which means that we also need to see how they are, what they like and how they act and react to the world around them.

How do you build your relationship with your pet(s) (especially when you first bring them home)? Do you immediately train them or do you get to know their personality first? The thing that people need to remember about grief, is that grief is different for each individual. The way people grieve is different and grief has no timeline. Everyone's grief process will be unique to the individual. So it is unreasonable to tell someone that they should be over a particular death by now, if say six months have gone by. Those kinds of statements tend to be hurtful for the person who is grieving. Each person will grieve and will cope in their own way, and in their own time. It's valid and it's normal. Some people are able to cope and heal faster than others.

When we grieve, people have this assumption that if we laugh or smile or have a good day we somehow dishonor the dead. Nothing could be further from the truth. During the grief process, it is normal to have good days as well as harder days. There will be days when the tears and the pain hit you seemingly out of nowhere. There will also be days when the emotional load is lighter and you find the ability to laugh and to smile. The best thing we can do to honor the loved one who has passed is to remember them for how they lived. To share their stories, how they overcame adversity or how they were a complete comedian. This is applicable for humans as well as animals.

Grief is a natural part of our being. Since we, as human beings, have a full range of emotions (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Love, Fear etc), it stands to reason that grief is part and parcel of that emotional spectrum. We grieve because we love. As a side note, grief is not necessarily just reserved for the passing of a loved one. It can also be the dissolution of a partnership. It can be a divorce. It can be leaving a job, or anything of the kind where you would still be grieving the loss of what was (or what you had), if you are emotionally attached to it. Grief is a natural and normal process.

When it comes to our animals. The vast majority of society doesn't think that grieving the loss of something other than a human is valid. Grieving the loss of another being, regardless of what species they are - is valid. It is part of our emotional process. It's part of what we do and who we are as beings. Animals are also thinking, feeling emotional beings that have their own opinions about the world around them. When we invite an animal into our lives, we build a relationship, a connection and a bond with them. Of course, we are going to grieve their loss when they ultimately pass. Our animals also grieve for us when we pass.
