2 weeks ago on a Saturday afternoon, Jessica reached out to us with a major chicken situation: she had a brand-new coop, three young pullets, and a dream of giving them a safe, secure space away from the goats and pigs on her beautiful property. She mentioned wanting to expand her flock—and wouldn’t you know it—we had four pullets in the brooder just about ready for their forever home. She claimed them right then and there and we discussed a plan for her flock.
We rolled in for a same-day consultation, got the full tour, and realized real quick: time was tight. The chickens were still bunking in a barn stall, and it just happened to be the stall for the show hogs and goats that were arriving the very next morning. And the kicker? those hogs and goats have an access door to the area where her chickens are going to be. Jessica needed serious predator-proofing, durable fencing to protect the birds, and a game plan that wouldn’t waste her time or money.
Challenge accepted—and the clock was ticking.
That evening, we got straight to work. As the sun dropped behind the trees, we laid down a moisture barrier, added premium bedding, and mixed in a layer of our coffee grounds to help with odor control and composting (She liked it so much she wants it every 2 weeks now). We relocated her three birds into their new home just as the last bit of daylight disappeared. No waiting, no rescheduling—we knocked it out that same Saturday night.
The next day, I came back to hang temporary fencing and reinforce the base of the coop and surrounding fence. We figured out a locking solution for her nest box door, gate, and even threw on a little thermometer for a quick touch. But the real test came when her permanent run enclosure finally arrived.
Fast forward to this past Sunday, I did a full pre-inspection and found what most folks would call a headache: uneven terrain, a large drainage grate in an awkward location, leftover fencing, and rocky ground that would make a shovel cry.
But here’s the BockLand difference:
🔩 Instead of tearing out old fencing or wasting time and materials, I incorporated what was already there into the structural layout. This saved her money, reduced waste, and kept the build tight.
🌿 The rocks that could’ve ruined a lesser job? I used them to accentuate posts and shape a natural, functional landscape.
📏 That unlevel ground became a built-in grade for drainage and added a visual edge that actually looks intentional.
💧 The sewer drain? Worked around it with clean lines and full function. Nothing was compromised. Drainage in, predators out.
Every challenge became part of the solution. Every obstacle added character. And yes—I hit every shiny staple with a Sharpie because a proper, sturdy build should look good too.
