If you're thinking of getting into animal rescue, here's something you need to know: you need to build armor, not just for the hard work, but for the people.

You’ll need more than compassion. You’ll need resilience. You’ll need to remind yourself daily why you started, because the world will test you.

People will cheer you on when you post a happy rescue story. But when you say no, because your rescue is full, your funds are low, or your team is exhausted, those same voices will criticize you.

They’ll forget the 600 animals you saved and focus on the one you couldn’t take. Don’t let it change your heart.

Some people will praise your care, your process, your kindness, until they want to surrender a pet, and you ask questions or try to help them work through it. Suddenly, you’re the worst person for them.

That’s part of the job.

You’ll lose relationships. Some friends won’t understand why you fight for animal rights. Others will be cold to you when you’re being too dramatic for them after spending the night with a dying rescue. Let them go.

People will call you every hour, message you at 2am, expect you to be available around the clock. And when you finally pause to breathe, they’ll say you’re fake, you don’t care. It’ll sting, but keep breathing anyway.

Other rescuers will criticize how you operate, even if they’ve never set foot in your rescue. Some will help. Others will just talk. Focus on the work, not the noise.

You’ll see things you can’t unsee. You’ll witness cruelty. And sometimes, no matter how fast you get there or how much you spend, you’ll still lose the animal. Those are the nights you’ll sit and cry alone, and no one knows that.

But even in that pain, you’ll keep going.
Because despite all of it, the judgment, the burnout, the loss, the work matters.
Every life saved is a reason to continue.

Rescue is beautiful, heartbreaking, and unforgiving. But if you’re in it for the right reasons, you’ll find strength in the heartbreak and purpose in the pain. Just don’t lose yourself in the process.

Felt like this was much needed right now. For my friends, my partner and all my rescue friends struggling and for everyone who wonders why I don’t respond, why I dont answer your calls, why I forget things, why I miss or cancel appointments… it’s because of this.

We are extremely heartbroken to tell you, this baby girl passed away while at OSU vet hospital......

UPDATE:
We have 2230.00 of the 3750.00 we need.

She's being transfered to OSU. We do not have hard copy, but high end is 5k and we need 75% of that today!

Poor Liberty is fighting for her life and we need help!! She was stable and did fairly well until about noon today. We are back at Williamette Veterinary Hospital, they think she will need to be hospitalized with IV antibiotics and that she is becoming septic. This afternoon she became very lethargic, shaking, low body temperature even though she was in the incubator, and is starting to have some breathing difficulties as well as some pus discharge from her front paw. She is such a sweet strong little baby and we want to try to do everything we can to save her but we need your help! Without the funds to hospitalized Liberty, her outcome looks very grim.

If they will take her, we will transfer to OSU, but we don't know if they'll take her.

Kitty Spotlight!

Penny and Leo ❤💙

Leo is bonded with His sister Penny. Their foster affectionately calls them tweedle dee and tweedle dum. They tumble and play hard together, and can be found snuggling quite frequently. Leo is the more outwardly social of the two (will BEG for belly scritches), but Penn comes in a close second. She loves to be near and get chin rubs in particular. Feather toys, overarching exciting things, and bird watching all get the chatter going.

Every litter has an assumed leader and extrovert, and Leo happily assumes that role among his current sibling group. Quick to greet you at the door with his sister Penny, he is chatty, eager, and the first to engage in whatever you're doing, whether it's relaxation time or playtime with a string toy (his favorite). He enjoys initiating a vigorous chase/play session with fellow residents and is always first in line for mealtime. Pretty sure he doesn't realize he's not a human child, as he follows you around and needs proximity to his favorite people. He will curl up on the couch with you and loves being under blankets.

Leo does not mind being picked up and held in a calm environment. You can pet him and move around for a bit, but he has places to go, so when he is ready, he will jump down and continue his adventures. He loves all the toys!

Penny

If Disney were to illustrate a "teenage" tabby kitten for a new movie, the result would look a lot like Penny. She's got a pert little nose, round face, and big luminous eyes. She's happiest receiving chin scritches and lounging adjacent to you on a quiet afternoon. Penny will on a dime swap from playtime with her brother to a good scratch session on her favorite cardboard lounger or corded post, with some possible human snuggles in this mix. Her current favorite spots to nap include the hanging basket on the cat tree or curled with a sibling in a cozy bed, but with time may discover that human laps are the best thing since sliced bread.

She is a very proper lady, and her litter box habits are immaculate.

Because all of our kitties are in foster homes we do visitations with our cats with pre-approved adoption applications. We place our kittens and cats in homes with the best fit based on personality, age, and location.

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who stepped up to help with Liberty, our most recent medical needs kitty. Her outlook was bleak without intervention, but thanks to your generosity, she now has a fighting chance. While she still has a road to recovery ahead, her future is filled with hope—because of you.

Here are her siblings—Justice, Valor, Jubilee, and Noble—who are all thriving under the care of their emergency placement foster.

If you’ve ever considered fostering cats or kittens like these, we would love to have you join our team. Please visit our website at www.keithaskittierescue.org and click the link for the foster application.

Thank you again for your continued support. We truly couldn’t do this without you.

***UPDATE PART 2***

The night vet came in and decided on another course of action. While they believe the leg should be amputated, the more pressing matter is the infection and closing the wound. X rays will also be done to check for fractures. So for now, this is the new estimate for tonight. Additional treatment will be later.

Thank you for your donations. Any help is appreciated, particularly since Liberty will require own going medical care in the near future.

***UPDATE***

Posted in the comments is the low and high estimate of Liberty's vet bill. We need help immediately for her. After your gracious contributions ,we need a minimum of $1550 to cover the low end of the estimate.

Here is what he vet said to our medical fosters:

She is stable but her white blood cells are fairly elevated, and her glucose is high even though she is decently past due for feed but they think it's more related to stress and pain. They want to keep her overnight, X-ray, more blood work if they can even get enough blood to test, possibly ultrasound, clean the wound, try to close it and put in a drain but it might have to heal open due to the extent and lack of good tissue. They want to double check her bowel, urinary tract, and abdominal cavity to make sure no maggots perforated anything. They probably won't start surgery until the night vet gets here since she will be leaving soon and doesn't want to switch in the middle of surgery.

🚨 Urgent Help Needed! 🚨

We were recently contacted by a woman working out in her field with a combine. Thankfully, her dog sensed something ahead and alerted her just in time. When she stopped to check, she discovered a tiny litter of kittens directly in the path of the machine.

Tragically, one of the five kittens was injured. The remaining four appear to be unharmed and are doing well, but the injured baby—who we've named Liberty—needs immediate veterinary care. **graphic picture in the comments**

Liberty is currently with one of our medical fosters, receiving pain management and sedation. Sadly, her wound has become infested with maggots, and her leg shows signs of a severe tendon injury. It is cold to the touch, and there's a very real chance it may need to be amputated.

This sweet girl is only about four weeks old, and despite everything, she’s fighting hard. She has a long journey ahead, but we believe in giving her every chance possible.

💔 We need your help.
We simply don’t have the funds to cover the cost of her urgent care. As soon as we get her into the vet, we will post an estimate—but we already know it’s going to be more than our current budget can handle.

Please consider donating to help Liberty get the care she needs:

Three words of advice for reaching out to animal rescuers: assume the best.

Assume that if you’re reaching out to someone who does animal rescue, you’re reaching out to someone who has a huge heart. Assume that they care deeply about saving lives. Assume that if they don’t respond to you right away, or at all, it’s because they’re so busy helping animals. Assume that you’re the 10th, 20th, or 100th person to reach out to them today asking for help. Assume that if they can’t help you, it’s because they are already at max capacity. Assume that you do not know or see a fraction of what is on their plate. Assume that they might be exhausted. Assume that they might be grieving, or tender. Assume that they are a loving, kind person who is a source of good for the world. Assume that they are worthy of being treated with consideration and respect. Assume that they are human.

Because 9 times out of 10, if you assume these things about an animal rescuer, you will be right. So when you reach out to an animal rescuer, let your words be filled with gratitude, patience, and understanding. Don’t use your words to jab at animal rescuers for not being available enough, not doing more, not “caring,” not being able to single-handedly save the world. Treat animal rescuers with compassion, not just when they can help you, but even—and especially—when they can’t. And when they can’t, don’t assume the worst. Assume the best.
