Do you know how important dental care is for your dog?

In addition to dental cleanings performed by your veterinarian, it is important to brush your dog's teeth. This will help prevent biofilm (a bacterial overgrowth) on the gum line which will turn into plaque and tartar, causing inflammation and infection. Bacteria can not only contribute to bad breath, but also contribute to periodontal disease, which has been linked to severe disease throughout the body including liver, kidney, heart, lungs, certain cancers, diabetes and even early mortality.

Sunflower Canine offers teeth brushing as part of our grooming services! We only use the highest quality toothpaste (free of any fluoride and xylitol - both of which can be found in human toothpaste and is toxic to dogs)

We will also send your dog's toothbrush home with you and show you how to brush at home! It isn't an easy task but take it slow and it can be done. Or bring your dog to us to handle it!

One of our favorites, , started coming to Sunflower Canine when he was 4 months old. He’s now a year and a half and a big boy! Summer weather is here! Please be aware of the dangers for your dog.

Hot surfaces will burn your dog's feet in no time! Remember the 7 second rule: If you can't keep your hand on the concrete or the asphalt for more than 7 seconds, it's way too hot for your dog's paws.

Walk when it's cool, keep them in the grass, or try doggie shoes! Just don't use tight fitting rubber ones as they don't allow the feet to breathe.

Leaving your dog in a parked vehicle, no matter how long, is simply unsafe. Temperatures inside can rise to dangerous levels in a few short minutes. Even if the outside temp is 70, the inside of the car can reach 100 very quickly.

Always have cool, fresh water available. Bring along a collapsible bowl and water bottle on your walks. Watch for signs of distress, especially in senior and/or brachycephalic breeds (short nosed dogs: pug, boxer, bulldog, shih tzu, etc). Don't hesitate to get your dog veterinary attention if they are showing signs of heat stroke such as vomiting or panting excessively.

Maggie and Gracie are two sweet ladies who have been recently rescued. They are learning so many things about the world, trust, affection, and love. They’re spending some time with us so while they’re here, we are doing a little rescue rehab. Poor girls have been through so much but are coming along - and out of their shells - nicely!

"The original Kong dog toy is one of the best toys for dogs with a strong desire to chew or lick. Because you can stuff food inside the toy, it gives them a problem to solve to try and get it out. A lot of pet owners use peanut butter but there are a variety of options you can put in your pup’s KONG to keep things interesting AND make “Kong Time” last a whole lot longer! PRO-TIP: Freeze the KONG after stuffing to reduce the mess!"

This stunner is named Ellie. Ellie is a very special lady who completely lucked out in the foster family department. Our dear friend, Julie, is helping this gorgeous gal become acclimated to a home and learn the basics and that includes time with Sunflower Canine. Ellie is a young, happy, playful girl who happens to be deaf but has learned hand signals as a way of understanding what is being asked of her. Her eyes and her smile will melt your heart and very soon she will be available for your home.

Introducing the newest pup in class! Everyone, please meet Lily. Lily is working hard with us to achieve her dream of an office job. She has the smarts and the drive, she just lacks a little confidence. Once we help her through that and teach her a few rules and manners, look out, law office, here she comes!

Sweet, happy, spunky, Cheyenne! Cheyenne is staying with us and is completely enjoying her stay! She has had nature walks, playtime, and relaxing naps on the couch. These are always included with our boarding rates! She’s also going to be fresh, clean, and looking her best because her Dad treated her to a spa day while she’s with us. We are having as much fun with her as she is with us!
