Fourth of July is one of the busiest times of year for lost pets.

While we look forward to celebrating with friends, family, and fireworks, many dogs experience the holiday very differently. The loud noises, flashing lights, and unfamiliar activity can be frightening, even for dogs that normally seem calm and confident.

In fact, The Animal Foundation took in approximately 100 dogs between July 4th and July 7th in 2025 as a result of firework-related escapes.

Here are a few ways you can help keep your dog safe this Independence Day:

🐾 Make sure your dog's ID tags and microchip information are current.
🐾 Exercise your dog earlier in the day to help burn off excess energy.
🐾 Keep pets indoors before fireworks begin and secure all doors, gates, and windows.
🐾 Create a safe, quiet space where your dog can relax away from the noise.
🐾 Consider playing music, running a fan, or using white noise to help mask fireworks sounds.
🐾 Never assume your dog "won't run." Even dogs that have never escaped before can panic when startled.

If your dog struggles with noise sensitivity or anxiety around fireworks, start preparing now rather than waiting until July 4th.
