Food for thought for new dog owners. It doesn't matter the size of the dog you have, if they are under 2 1/2 years old they are still a puppy. In thinking this through, we can't leave a human child home alone until they are what, 12 years old? We can't leave a dog home alone (free in your house) until they are no longer a puppy in mentality. Crating for a few hours and or setting up a kennel to keep your house and the dog safe is needed. I see post after posts of people expecting their dogs to behave when they aren't home and they are still a puppy. Dogs take 2 to 3 years to really train and reinforce the correct behavior, or we are setting them up for failure. It isn't the dogs fault ever. Dogs are very smart, but left to their own judgement when they are still learning isn't the right set up. If they start a bad behavior it is much harder to redirect than them never having started in the first place.
