From chaos to calm...

Willie and Jazz are here for some manners! Three week board and trains started today and they're already being quiet in their kennels.

They will learn the following commands, both on and off leash: Sit, Down, Place, Here/Come, and Heel.

Stay tuned for their progress!

It's Training Tip Tuesday!

Two weeks ago Lottie and her handler Janelle missed two alerts out of ten for an NQ at a scentwork trial. She had two lessons with us, and her next trial she Q'd in all her runs AND got two High In Trials! We are so proud of Janelle because she is putting in the work.

So what's the tip? TRAIN! You can take all the lessons, watch all the videos and take all the classes in the world but you have to do the work.

A side note...Janelle has been ruined now that shes trained with us. She looks at retaining walls, brick buildings, and store aisles as places to put hides and we LOVE it!

It's Mother's Day! It seems fitting to do a post about the wonderful mothers in the canine world.

Female dogs have a heat cycle every 6 months, and can have a healthy cycle that produces puppies as young as six months old. Even though she can get pregnant that young it's strongly advised not to breed due to her emotional immaturity. She could refuse to care for the puppies, or even harm them.

Her heat cycle is approximately three weeks long, with fertility only during ovulation which is approximately day 9-14 of her heat cycle. A male dog's s***m can live up to five days in the female!

Once she's bred, it can be determined if she's pregnant at 27-30 post ovulation via an ultrasound at the vet. A puppy count xray is recommended at approximately 58-62 days post ovulation to count the number of spines so the breeder knows how many puppies she is carrying.

She will whelp at 63 days gestation, give or take a couple of days. After her puppy count x-rays it's recommended that her temperature be taken twice a day. When she is within 12-24 hours of labor her temperature will drop suddenly to below 99 degrees. When that happens labor is imminent.

Every puppy is a separate birth, with its own contractions, delivery and afterbirth. It can be minutes, or hours, between deliveries.

Puppies need to stay with their mother and littermates for at least 8 weeks so they learn crucial social skills such as bite inhibition. Puppies taken sooner experience more fear based behaviors and struggle with basic social skills later in life.

We all know that dogs need exercise, both for their bodies and their minds. It lengthens their life by keeping their heart strong and the weight optimal. But how many of us exercise our dogs to get better behavior?

The saying "A tired dog is a good dog" is only a good saying while they're asleep after the exercise. Once they're awake it's back to shenanigans. Exercise as a form of behavior modification creates an athlete that needs MORE exercise to wear them out and keeps them in an amped up, over aroused state of mind.

To make exercise more beneficial, put obedience commands to it. Make them stay sitting when you throw a toy, only allowing them to retrieve after you've given a release command. Instead of playing fetch, back tie your dog to a sturdy object, hide their favorite toy and have them find it. Try jogging your dog next to your bike...it's not easy staying at the same pace as a bike, and forcing your dog to hold a trot instead of a flat out run will tire them mentally as well as physically.

It's Fun Fact Friday!

Why do male dogs lift their legs to urinate?

When marking an area, if their scent is higher, it makes them appear to be larger and more intimidating to other dogs that come behind them. Dogs mark for several reasons, including dominance over others, territoriality, and to signal availability for mating. It's also used to communicate social hierarchy.

Why is the Heel position so important?

Dogs are predators. Their eyes are in front of their head and they're constantly scanning the environment, looking for threats and for prey. When you see a dog in front of their human on a walk, often pulling and out of control, they've taken the leadership role in the relationship. The handler often has zero relevance to the dog.

When your dog is on a loose leash at your side, with his nose at your hip or leg, he's in "follow mode." He's handed the leadership role over to you. He's trusting that you'll look out for danger and act accordingly. A dog in this mode is usually more relaxed and a lot more fun to take out in public.

The Heel command isn't just a way to get your dog to stop pulling on the leash. It's a way to get your dog in a better state of mind.

And just like that, sweet goldendoodle OB is heading home!

His manners and obedience are much improved, and his family will be able to take him out in public and enjoy him more. He's still a young fella so he will have silly moments, but that's to be expected until he's a mature dog. We are grateful that his family trusted us with his training.

How many of you have heard that you have to socialize your puppy/dog? It needs to make friends with strangers, meet 100 people in 100 days? It needs to play with other dogs so it won't become reactive or aggressive towards them? (entire world raises hand)

What if that's actually causing the problems you're trying to avoid, or fix?

When you ask strangers to pet your dog or give your dog treats, you're teaching them to value strangers more than they value you. They see humans as resource dispensing machines and you're the taxi that gets them there. It doesn't take long for your dog to ignore you and focus on everyone else.

Now let's talk about dog socialization. You want your dog to have friends so you go to a dog park. All it takes is one time of being bullied, or worse yet attacked, and you have a very high likelihood of your dog being reactive towards other dogs for the rest of its life. Dog socialization should be done with a select few other dogs that are neutral to other dogs, give appropriate corrections for unacceptable behavior, and can be verbally controlled by their owner.

So what exactly is socialization? It's teaching your dog how to act in public...how to get used to all the sights, sounds, and smells without acting like a complete fool. That starts with solid obedience and focus work at home, then in low distraction environments, then out into the real world. Yes, it's work, but that investment up front is part of a highly enjoyable lifetime with a well-behaved dog.

Staff favorite Lady Bird has been coming on Mondays as a Day Training drop off. We put obedience on her, and her owner takes her home knowing what Lady Bird learned, and what she needs to work on all week.

Today, Lady Bird was supposed to start her scent work training, but alas...she was completely unmotivated. You see, Lady Bird's mom feeds her very well and she arrived with a full tummy. She didn't want treats, she has no desire to play with a toy. What she wanted was scratches, love, and a nap. And nap she did!

Without motivation it's hard to train, so Lady Bird just hung out with us today. Her owner got strict instructions to withhold her breakfast next week so she's ready to work.
