🚨PANLEUK ALERT🚨
THERE IS HOPE!!!

My small operation is getting smacked with Panleuk. I lost a 6 month old kitten today that I was fostering, even though he was vaccinated 2 days before I got him. Now my 2 residental girls, 1 is the same age as the kitten that died today, have tested positive even though they too are vaccinated. I have 2 other foster/rehabs that I am desperately trying to keep safe AND WE HAVE A REAL SHOT AT MAKING IT OUT WITH THESE 4 LIVES IN TACT if I can care for them properly!

UPDATE: 1 OF THE FOSTERS IS CONFIRMED POSITIVE, WITH A GREAT OUTLOOK BECAUSE I AM STAYING ON TOP OF THIS ALL!

Right now the prognosis for my 2 positive girls is "stable and favorable". I was funded on their tests and some initial treatment for the 2 positive girls, but I had to come home and throw away every single bed, blanket, scratching post, soft/furry toy, and litterbox we had. I set up a few cardboard boxes to get us theough the night and someone sent over a little bit of litter, but I am desperate for supplies to get through this with all 4 cats living to meow the tale! IT IS NOT EASY TO OVERCOME THIS DISEASE, BUT THEY HAVE A GOOD PROGNOSIS RIGHT NOW!!!

AN UPDATE ABOUT MARY:

It's been a few weeks and Mary has settled back into the posh life like the English Queen she is!

Because so little money was raised, I used it to do what I could for her at home, in order to get her stabilized. I bathed her myself at Tractor Supply with medicated products I purchased there. I used some leftover gabapentin from another cat to get her through the first few days of detox and settling in. And I got a basic dewormer from the store too. Here is what I have also learned..

​Four years ago, Mary was the center of someone’s universe. She was a deeply loved, doted-on companion to an elderly woman who made sure Mary spent every night curled up in bed beside her. They had a partnership built on comfort and safety.

​When her owner passed away suddenly, Mary’s world was destroyed, but not just because her beloved owner died. Through no fault of her own, she was handed off to a neighbor with zero screening beforehand. This home was an environment of total chaos, active addiction, and extreme neglect. ​For the last four years, Mary has lived in a house saturated with literal filth, various narcotic smoke, and a severe roach infestation. Even worse than the physical conditions was the emotional toll...

- ​Total Isolation: She received zero affection, not even petting, and no mental stimulation or enrichment. She went from being a cherished family member to a piece of furniture in a house of turmoil.

- ​This Week: After her most recent caretaker was moved into assisted living, Mary has been 100% alone in that awful house, seeing a neighbor for only five minutes, twice a day to be fed.

​The mission is clinical rehabilitation from medical to social. ​Mary isn’t just "homeless"—she is physically and mentally depleted. To bring her back to the "spoiled bed-cat" she was born to be, we are launching an intensive medical rehabilitation plan as follows:

- ​Systemic Detox: After four years of breathing second-hand narcotic smoke and toxins, Mary needs a full diagnostic blood panel to assess her liver and kidney function and ensure her system can stabilize in clean air.

- ​Respiratory & Infection Control: Living in a roach-infested environment almost guarantees chronic respiratory issues and internal parasites. She requires aggressive antibiotics, internal deworming, and deep medicated baths to remove pest waste and allergens from her coat.

- ​The Foundation: We are starting from scratch. Because she has had zero veterinary care in years, she will require a full physical exam, SNAP testing for FIV/FeLV, and essential vaccines. We also anticipate she will need to be spayed and microchipped to ensure she is protected and healthy for the rest of her life.

​Mary has survived the darkness, and tomorrow her recovery begins. Our goal at Fred’s Catio is to provide her with the medical stabilization, a clean environment, and the massive amounts of affection she has been starved of.
