‘Goober’ (6lb poodle) has come pretty far, when he started with me he was accustomed to using aggressive displays to manipulate. He was biting and growling anytime his parents (or anyone else) attempted to make him do something he didn’t feel like doing- getting a bath, being groomed, putting a leash on, etc. He also used these methods in order to get or keep things that he did want- jumping up on the bed and then attacking you if you tried to get him to come down, stealing things he wasn’t supposed to be chewing on and attacking you if you tried to take it away, etc. I am happy to say that it’s now been 3 weeks since he’s tried pulling any of these moves on us, and that he is learning his boundaries and earning new freedoms each day.
I have been bathing him at least 3 times a week to practice, as well as giving him completely terrible haircuts. He has even successfully made it through a nail trimming session. We’re happy with that progress.

I love the team at our local Home Depot. They’re always happy to see me with the dogs. 🐕
This is one of the places I recommend taking your dog to ‘proof’ their behaviors (ideally you want your obedience to be consistent regardless of noises, people, children, equipment being used) and to practice in a new environment with new sounds.
Navigating Home Depot comes with a lot of little tests for your pup, perfect to gauge where they’re at and whether they might need some extra work in certain areas.

Great day hiking back in the Olowalu Stream with my boy ‘Willis’ (1.5 yr Blue Nose Pit) and trainee ‘Milo’ (3 yr Chihuahua-Jack Russell). ‘Milo’ was having a tough time warming up to Willis because of his insecurity issues, but after navigating this terrain alongside him, Milo now walks in his shadow and trusts him as a friend and guide. Hiking also helps instill trust in you and respect for you as an owner / leader - your dog gets to see that you can successfully help them through new and sometimes uncomfortable environments. This is key when it comes to having a dog that is confident out in the world, as they will act up if they don’t have faith in your ability to handle things. ‘Milo’ has been in love with my wife since his first day here, but has now opened up to Willis and I.

Pua is a 7 month old Catahoula Leopard Dog. Gorgeous markings, but unfortunately this look came at a cost for him and he was born deaf.
Pua has been a part of my pack since his Ohana first found him at 12 weeks old. Pua is easily startled and is highly skeptical of the unknown- this is amplified by his inability to hear. His commands have been taught in sign language which he is very receptive to. We continue to work on building Pua’s confidence, social skills, and ability to navigate different environments day by day. 🌏🐾
