Lost and Found Pets of Greater Lafayette

Lost and Found Pets of Greater Lafayette To post with us; Send a Message! This page provides a compiled list of lost & found, animals in the Greater Lafayette, IN and surrounding areas.

We work with Animal Control, the Humane Society for Greater Lafayette & area vets / shelters / rescues. SEND US A MESSAGE TO POST! The Official Lost and Found Pets of Greater Lafayette community page. Serving Lafayette, Indiana and surrounding areas. We are a Free Service, professionally run, Meta-Verified, organization under a 501c3 rescue, Pawswap of Greater Lafayette. We have been serving the c

ommunity since 2011. If you have any information about a lost or found pet, then send us a message! We will happily post for you. Include a picture of the pet; location lost/found, details such as neuter, wearing a collar, microchipped etc., and a way to contact you. If you are uncomfortable with your information being online, then we don't have to post it. We just like a direct way to contact you when often time is of the essence. If you have lost your pet in Tippecanoe County, the shelter with the stray contract with Tippecanoe County and the Cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette, is the Humane Society for Greater Lafayette. We work closely with them posting all strays that come into their facility. We will often relay messages through them to you if we have contact with owners/finders. Please note, they have a 5 day holding period for stray dogs. There is no hold for cats unless the cat has identification. In this case, Cats are held only 3 days for owner reclaim. There is a small fee to pick up your pet that increases daily. Please, speak with the shelter directly on specifics. Humane Society for Greater Lafayette 3150 Sagamore Parkway Lafayette, IN
Hours: Monday Closed. Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun 12-6pm

We receive notice of lost or found animals through various sources including animal control, The Humane Society for Greater Lafayette, other area shelters, rescues, veterinary clinics, craigslist, Facebook sites, the newspaper, and other online sources. We simply repost this information and attempt to keep each posting up to date. We love to see "Reunited" the most. Check out our albums for previous posts. Please also notice we have a lot of tips and helpful information pinned at the top of our page. We have info available on Scams (the code people you should ignore if posting your phone number online) and very specific instructions if your cat slips out of the house or wanders too far out of their comfort zone. We also assist in trapping dogs that are evasive and have tips for owners who are struggling to get their pets to safety, because they have become fearful. We do work regular jobs, busy lives, and sometimes sleep. If you message us, we will try to get to your response as quickly as possible. We often contact people for more information and have to wait to hear back. This is another reason why cell phone numbers work best. Please know that Tippecanoe County is primarily a No-Kill county. Our shelter does not euthanize for space or because of breed. They have a strong community cat program in place that will allow semi-feral and feral cats to be released to their found location after being fixed and ear-tipped (a straight cut across the tip of the left ear). We love all of our animal control officers. The City of Lafayette has 4 officers, West Lafayette has 1, and Tippecanoe County has 1. Again, all pets through animal control end up at the Humane Society for Greater Lafayette. Additionally, we have great relationships with other area vets, shelters, and rescues who report strays to us including Almost Home, Natalie's Second Chance, Loving Heart, and various vet clinics. Rarely, those entities take in strays, but do report to the property authorities and post with us. (That's why we started this service to be a centralized hub for local posting.) We love when a streamlined plan comes together and works! Some miscellaneous tips before we let you go; Consider posting flyers to find your lost pet, or the owner of a pet you found. Include your mail carrier (they know things.) We especially like when owners do a yard sale style sign with your lost pets information and put it in your yard. Contact dispatch to reach animal control if reporting a lost or found pet. City of Lafayette 765-807-1200, City of Lafayette only picks up animals when animal control is on duty (typically M-F 8am-8pm and Sat/Sun 10-6pm.) Tippecanoe County - 765-423-9321. County Animal Control is on duty M-F 8-5. County deputies assist in pick ups when time allows. West Lafayette 765-775-5200. West Lafayette Police Department picks up strays as needed and as time allows. They will often post dogs on their WLPD page and hold for a bit before transferring to the shelter. MICROCHIPS - WE LOVE THOSE THINGS! (Only when they are up to date and with no privacy hold.) If your pet is microchipped, contact the company and make sure your information is up to date and they are aware the pet is missing. They can make notes in the system so it's logged if someone calls in. Make sure your pet's microchip doesn't have a privacy hold. That way info can be given out to the finder so they can reach you if the ONE call from the vet's office is misdialed or missed by you. Reminder: Microchips are NOT GPS (yet). (We hope this will be a thing in the future.) If you have found a pet, make sure it gets scanned for a microchip. (You cannot feel or see microchips. They must be scanned with the proper device to find the registered number.) If the info on the chip is outdated, we can help with that! We are happy to research it and can often track them down so make sure the vet clinic writes the microchip number down for you. Purdue Vet Hospital / Emergency Services can scan for microchips 24/7. Any local veterinarian can scan for a chip during open hours. Cats: If you have lost your indoor cat; they are typically very close by and hiding outside. We encourage a scent station and your time and effort spending a lot of time outside with good smelling food to entice them out of hiding. They are usually only a house or two away if not in your yard hiding under brush, bushes, decks, sheds, trailers, etc. Ask neighbors to check their garages and sheds so they are not trapped. Look up into trees and up onto nearby roofs. Cats can get spooked and do some crazy things. Even cats that spend time outdoors have a comfort zone. If spooked out of their comfort zone, they will get freaked out and hide. The scent station and your presence outside, helps them orient to where home is. Rain / snow / storms can be very disorienting. Dogs: Supervise outdoor time, use a leash, check your gates, repair your fence, bring them in during thunderstorms and fireworks, SPAY and NEUTER reduces roaming, Play goalie with the front door when guests arrive, Put ID tags on their collars and keep them up to date; Microchip and keep the chip info up to date, Replace batteries in electric fence collars regularly (Put it on your calendar.) Finally: 4 Precious Paws is a low cost clinic in town providing low cost spay and neuters. They also have a Community Cat program and often run specials for low-income and residents of Tippecanoe County. They have a walk-in shot clinic on Wednesdays. Additionally, Wildcat Animal Clinic has walk-in hours and a low cost clinic several days a week. We love all of the involvement from our followers. We hope to soon have even more support from the community so that there won't be as much guessing about what happens if someone finds or loses a pet. Facebook is a wonderful tool for spreading information quickly. We encourage you to share our posts! We hope to have a website coming soon!
