How to train an anxious dog? šŸ¾šŸ„ŗšŸ•

I get asked this question frequently and I always ask the owner, think of the most confident person in your life or celebrity/athlete you admire, do you think they became that way overnight? Do you think they became that way because life was always easy and was handed to them? Of course not, they all became confident through trial and error and that is the same with your dog.

Your dog carries thousands of years of genetic make up from ancestors that had to confront many obstacles just to survive just like all wild animals do, through that they became resilient and were able to avoid predators. Today’s dogs are sheltered, hidden from the world and once they do step out to the world for a vet visit, grooming appointment or even a walk around the block then fear is shown and our natural response is to coddle and protect, unfortunately our dogs don’t process emotions the same way humans do. Our dogs are creatures of habit and if your dog’s routine isn’t filled with exposure, structure, love and trust then you will ultimately have an anxious dog.

Anxiety and confidence are both learned behaviors, do what Nora’s owners are doing and help build your dogs confidence through structured training , it’s all about taking it one day at a time and making every accomplishment easy enough so the dog doesn’t shut down, once they conquer a small fear the next one will be much easier.

1 year ago Buster and I started working together, fast forward to today he is our star student always showing off at group class! I’m blessed to have met and worked with this little guy who I can now call my friend and not my enemy, my shoes have not seen or felt busters k9 teeth since the day we met. We’re so proud of you and your amazing dedicated owners!

Patience is a virtue šŸ¾šŸ™šŸ½
That belief is a big reason behind the name Paws & Reflect Dog Training.

As owners, sometimes progress doesn’t come from doing more, but from pausing and reflecting on what might be slowing us or our dogs down. Training isn’t just about perfect reps and fast reps, it’s also about teaching dogs how to wait, think, and earn the reward.

In this session, Thor and his owner share the same goal. She’s asking for a clean heel. Thor understands the position and the follow-through, but he was missing the ending—stopping parallel to her and sitting when she stops. Thor, of course, wanted the treat.

The rule was simple: the reward only comes once he sits when she stops walking. After just two repetitions, Thor realized that patience and precision get him the reward faster.

Clear expectations. Consistent follow-through. Shared goals.
That’s where real progress happens. 🐾

We miss our training sessions with Sokka! 🐾
But we couldn’t be more proud of how far he and his family have come together.

When we first met Sokka, his energy was off the charts, and his social skills with other dogs were overwhelming for his owners. Fast forward to today: Sokka lives a calm, confident life both mentally and physically.

His owners now enjoy peaceful walks without worrying about pulling, reactivity, or what to do if he doesn’t listen. That’s the power of teamwork, structure, and patience.

Huge thank you to Elizabeth for trusting us with your Siberian Husky — Sokka’s lucky to have you and the girls as his best friends. ā¤ļø

Sokka is a reminder that with the right support system, consistency, and a solid training plan, you can achieve life-changing results that last a lifetime.
