I spent a couple of days in March with Paul Dietz and two of my young horses. Paul is a true, exceptional horseman in the best sense possible. He apprenticed and rode with Buck Brannaman and was deeply influenced by Tom Dorrance and Ray Hunt. Paul was invited to ride in the Tom Dorrance benefit in Ft. Worth, hosted by Ray Hunt, before Ray's passing. Paul now travels the world putting on clinics and his insight, perceptions, and communication skills are remarkable, both with the horse, and with rider. I always come away from Paul with a better understanding of my horses and what I want to achieve, and humbled, knowing there is so much more to learn and the journey never ends. Enjoy it.

The 2019 National Western Stock Show was a lot of fun, with some great horses and competitors.

On the roping side, the Mile High Challenge again pitted the Quarter Horses against the Paints in a final rope off. Our Dun mare, Miss Gonna Be A Star was the high scoring AQHA Head Horse and came in second in the finals. Our Chestnut mare, Shootin Hy, was 4th high Head Horse overall. Thanks to TJ Watts and Clayton Van Aiken for helping show these horses to their maximum advantage.

Lots of credit to Crockett who showed both horses in the AQHA Ranch Riding and placing against some top competitors. The winner of the Ranch Riding also just happend to win the Invitational Open Freestyle Reining! Good job Crockett!

2018 NWSS AQHA Team Roping - Miss Gonna Be A Star, our Gunna Smoke mare (Mr. Gun Smoke) out of a Docs Dry Jess mare, was the high point AQHA Amateur Head horse. The mare worked well and I had a good day roping to win it. Thanks to TJ Watts and Clayton Van Aken for helping us show her to advantage.

Crockett and I showed at the National Western AQHA Team Roping show in January. Our horses did well in the open show, standing behind some really nice horses, including top World Show horses shown by JD Yates & Company, and not to mention Jay Wadhams, Congratulations to JD and crew, and Jay. Our thanks to TJ Watts, Brit Ellerman and Marcus Bannister for helping demonstrate our horses' abilities. Roping both ends on our reined cowhorses was a goal we've had for some time and we were able to realize that. Thanks to all that helped us make it happen.

Decades before 'natural horsemanship' and 'horse whispering' became big business, Ray Hunt was out there in an old pickup with a two-horse trailer, hoping to make enough gas money to get him to the next fairgrounds.
"I didn't see any commercial value in it", says Ray. "If I had, I probably wouldn't have done it".

The horse world didn't exactly welcome him.
"I was working with the mind", Ray explains.
"A lot of people didn't want to believe the horse had a mind.
'Get a bigger bit'. 'Get a bigger stick'. That was their approach'".

Spectators watched as untouched colts were saddled and ridden for the first time with hardly a buck.
In a matter of a few days the young horses were ready to go on the payroll, meaning they had enough faith in their riders and had learned enough of the rudiments to be useful on a ranch.

In this atmosphere of trust and understanding, with no hobbles or snubbing posts, no external devices, except for the now widely imitated orange flag, it was hard to see what Ray was doing to get such extraordinary results.
Accused of using ringers, drugging horses, even hypnotizing them, Ray laughed it off and kept going.
"I was there for the horse. People were way down the list."

On a recent visit to the Hunt's North Texas ranch, Pat and Linda Parelli stop by and the conversation soon shifts to something else that seems to have been on Ray's mind most of the day.
Can you be in it for the money as well as for the horse?
Pat tries to convince Ray you can. Pat doesn't succeed.
With Ray Hunt the horse comes first and anything that threatens the horse's status will always be a moral dilemma for him.

Excerpt from an article titled 'For The Horse' written by Patti Hudson which appeared in the 'Eastern Oregon Equine Magazine'.

“Empathy for the horse is the capacity of a person to be able to feel what the horse feels, to read a situation the same way and to have an understanding of what the horse is going to do in response to that situation. That’s empathy, or feeling with the horse and it’s a real effective way of learning from the horse. Even before the horse does whatever he’s about to do, a person who’s this way [empathetic] is going to understand the reason a horse does something. It takes time to get that deep knowledge of horses.” - Bill Dorrance.

If you ever had the chance to attend one of Ray's clinics; then you most probably would have heard Ray recite the poem 'The Guy in the Glass' written by Dale Wimbrow.
Here's another poem that Ray would sometimes recite.

Off to work Buffalo tomorrow with Jason Patrick, cow horse trainer in Steamboat Springs. When you have a "Rooster" sired cowhorse, who can't keep her feet still, it's a perfect combination.
