Velveteen, at age 13, has calved our 43rd calf of the year on 15 Sep ‘24. It’s a heifer!

Our good black cow named “Parker” calved this heifer on 12 September 2024. This is our 42nd calf of the year. Parker is a granddaughter of a bull named “Senator” who was arguably the best bull in the breed back in the ‘90s. Parker has now calved a healthy strong heifer at age 18. Commercial cattle outfits cull cows out of their herds at 8-12 years of age. If a Texas Longhorn cow in our herd is consistently a good mother and is easy to deal with, we keep her around for her natural life. Parker has paid her way and more by producing great calves, and continues to do so at age 18. What a cow! She illustrates the longevity trait of Texas Longhorns.

Here is first time mother Glyndwr with her heifer calved 1 Jul ‘24. Photo taken 8 Aug ‘24. I’e named the heifer “Bryn Du,” meaning black hill in Welsh🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿. This is pronounced phonetically in our American English as “Bryndee.” This is a black heifer with a hint of silver socks on her rear legs. Pretty cool! We’re still watching a few cows we expect to calve.

The 21st calf at Cwm Ceffyl Ranch LLC of ‘24 is on the ground. This one is a bull out of this nice young black cow. The remarkable thing about this beautiful baby is that a very few hours after his birth he was romping around like a two month old. I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t seen a bunch of young Texas Longhorn calves putting on a Wild West Show chasing each other like a thoroughbred race. What a sight!!!!!

The 20th calf of 2024 is a robust and flashy heifer calved on 4 May ‘24 by our good veteran cow Cocoa. Cocoa’s offspring are known to be fast growers, stout, and good mothers with impressive milk production, and horns on the smallish side. We forgive the smaller horns and value her offspring because of the other good traits. Way to go Cocoa.

Here is the bull that Habana calved on 27 April 2024 in the middle of a big snow & rain storm. He is doing well thanks to his attentive dam. This brings us to 19 calves this year.

This new heifer and her dam were waiting for me this morning. This is the 17th of ‘24. This makes three consecutive heifers. Now at 9 heifers and 8 bulls. Thank you to all that have expressed enjoyment from the new calf photos. I enjoy it on this end, also.
