🐀 Quick Reminder for Anyone Reaching Out About Rats

Facebook does not reliably notify me of messages. If you need to contact me about adoptables, surrenders, questions, or anything rescue‑related, texting is the best way to reach me.

If you message me on Facebook, I may not see it for quite a while.

Thanks for understanding — and for supporting the rats who need homes.

I’ve got 9 adult rescue rats living with me, each with their own story and their own quirks. They’re not show rats, they’re not breeder rats — they’re just sweet little souls who needed a safe place.

I do have rescues available if you’re looking for companions who are fun to watch and full of personality. They’re not as cuddly as my pet‑only rats, but they’re wonderful in their own way.

And just so it’s clear: none are free or under $10. That rule keeps them safe.

I wanted to share something important about the current rescues we have, especially after seeing some negative comments about cage setups on Facebook.

These boys were left outside in the Phoenix sun next to a dumpster to be thrown away. They came to us scared, overheated, and unsure of people. They don’t really want to be held right now — and honestly, I’m not sure they ever will be the cuddly type — but they are incredibly fun to watch. They play, explore, build nests, and interact with each other in the sweetest ways. They deserve homes where they can simply be rats without judgment.

What worries me is when people online criticize cages that are perfectly safe just because they’re set up differently than their own. That kind of negativity can scare off adopters, and these boys have already been through enough.

Here’s the truth:
Anything you put in a rat cage, someone on Facebook will say is unsafe. Yes, there are a few things worth avoiding — like bare wire floors or wheels that are too small — but rats, like people, can injure themselves on anything. We don’t remove bathtubs from our homes because a child once slipped in one.

What matters most is that the cage is clean, enriched, and thoughtfully arranged. And there are so many simple, safe enrichment ideas that work beautifully:

🟩 Box houses — even connected together to make big “rat apartments.”
đŸ§» Hanging toilet paper — they shred it, swing on it, and have a blast.
đŸȘ” Bird perches — great for climbing and adding vertical space.
đŸȘš Lava ledges — perfect for texture and natural nail wear.
🎁 Treat pouches — tiny treats wrapped in paper for them to open.

And here are a couple of things we personally like to use in our rescue cages:

đŸ§± A small brick under the water dish — helps keep nails naturally trimmed.
đŸ›ïž Goodwill pillowcases on Critter Nation shelves — they act like giant hammocks. We just check for excessive shredding so no loose strings wrap around a foot.

These boys don’t need perfection — they need kindness, patience, and a safe place to live out their lives. Please don’t let a few negative voices convince you that your setup isn’t “good enough.” If your cage is clean, enriched, and avoids the few genuinely risky items, you’re doing great.

And more importantly, you might be the person who gives these boys the home they were almost denied.

Please keep the rescue rats in your thoughts during this time of great suffering.
They are currently enduring conditions no rat should ever face
such as not enough clutter because the mail is taking approximately 47 years to deliver the enrichment I ordered.

These poor souls are forced to live in:
- Cages that are only moderately chaotic instead of full‑on “rat tornado zone”
- Hammocks that are perfectly fine but apparently “not fluffy enough”
- Enrichment that is “so last week” because their new toys are still on a truck somewhere between here and Mars
- A home where their human is busy juggling grandbaby ballet, grandbaby T‑ball, grandbaby baseball, work, and—did I mention?—puppies

According to the rescue rats, this is a humanitarian crisis.
According to me, they are still spoiled, dramatic, and fully capable of staging a mutiny the second the mailman pulls up.

Don’t worry—they’ll survive.
But they want everyone to know they are being emotionally devastated by the temporary lack of clutter.

A lot of people get rats without realizing how much care they actually need.
They aren’t “easy pets” or something you can set up and forget. Unless you want unfriendly, stressed, and stinky rats, they require real daily attention.

Rats are more like having tiny puppies than fish.
- Daily: quick spot‑cleaning, wiping shelves, refreshing bedding, checking water and enrichment
- Weekly: a full cage clean, washing accessories, resetting their environment
- Monthly: a deep clean to keep odors, bacteria, and respiratory issues under control

And just like puppies, if you don’t socialize them, handle them, and play with them, they may not stay friendly. Rats thrive on interaction, routine, and companionship.

Over time, I realized how many people end up with rats they can’t keep—wrong s*x, accidental litters, behavior they weren’t prepared for, or simply not enough time. Finding homes for adult rats is a lot like finding homes for senior dogs: it’s possible, but it takes effort, visibility, and the right audience.

That’s why we started this rescue.
We wanted a place where unwanted or surrendered rats could land safely, get proper care, and have a real chance at finding a home. Using resources like Petfinder helps us reach adopters who understand what these animals need.

It was expensive to set up, and it’s a lot of work—but it’s absolutely worth it. These little lives deserve a chance, and we’re here to make sure they get one.

I’m sorry I haven’t been posting much — life has a way of running off without me.
But the rescue kids are all doing well, even if I’m behind on updates.

I still need to get the girls up on Petfinder. It always takes longer than I expect, and the boys alone took me about five hours
mostly because I needed updated photos. And if you’ve ever tried to photograph rats, you know they move at the speed of light. At this point I’m convinced I need a real camera because my phone just can’t keep up with these little zoom missiles.

Thank you all for your patience and for loving these babies with me. More updates (and hopefully clearer photos) coming soon.
