In a world that moves way too fast, this is my calm.
Fresh air, curious chickens, soft clucks, and simple moments that ground me every single day.

No chaos. No rush.
Just happy hens, a peaceful coop, and a heart that feels full. 💛

My husband brought home a Charlie Brown Christmas tree… and honestly, it’s perfect. 🌲
A little sparse, a little crooked, but full of heart — and once decorated, it turned into something truly special.
Proof that sometimes all you need is a little love, a few lights, and the right people around you. ✨

Sending everyone snowy, single-digit, school-closed kind of day warmth 🤍❄️
The kind of day where the world slows down, the snow blankets everything in quiet, and even the toughest farm dogs pause to take it all in.

Stay warm, stay safe, and enjoy the stillness if you can ☕🔥🐾

❄️🐓 Winterizing for Chickens — StoneHeart Style! 🐓❄️

As the days get shorter and those cold winds start rolling in, it’s officially time to get the ladies (and the questionable roosters 😅) ready for winter! Chickens are shockingly cold-hardy, but they do need a few tweaks to stay cozy, healthy, and laying through the chill.

Here’s what we do each year to winterize our flock 👇

1️⃣ Ventilation over insulation!
It sounds backwards, but trust me — ventilation is EVERYTHING.

Warm, moist air = frostbite.
Fresh, moving air (above the roosts!) = happy, healthy chickens.

✔️ Keep vents up high to let humidity escape
❌ Avoid drafts blowing directly where they sleep

2️⃣ Keep it DRY.
Moisture is winter’s villain.

🪶 Add extra dry bedding (pine shavings, straw — pile it on!)
🌧️ Check for leaks or snow blow-ins
🐾 Fix muddy run spots before they freeze into chicken ankle-breakers

3️⃣ Unfrozen water = happy hens.
They can’t eat right or regulate their temp without it.

💧 Heated waterers are a gift
🔥 Or swap in warm water a couple times a day
Cold + dehydration = grumpy, non-laying chickens

4️⃣ Winter calories!
They burn more energy to stay warm.

🍽️ Keep layer feed full
🌾 Give a scoop of scratch before bedtime — it’s like turning on their internal wood stove overnight

5️⃣ Light for laying.
Short days = egg strike.
You can either:
✨ Let them rest naturally
OR
💡 Add soft lighting on a timer to reach 14–16 hours of daylight

Just ease into it — lighting changes can stress them.

6️⃣ Comb & wattle care.
If you’ve got big comb breeds, frostbite can happen.

A dab of Vaseline on those red wattles goes a long way!

7️⃣ Beat the boredom.
Coop fever is real.

🥬 Hang a cabbage
🌿 Throw in leaves or forage
🛁 Provide an indoor dust bath if possible

Winter doesn’t have to be rough on your flock — a little prep makes for cozy hens all season long 💛 Healthy hens = happy humans!

Apparently Aria took her “sit on the blocks” lesson from manners class VERY seriously… because now she’s brought it home and officially decided she is a porch gargoyle. 🗿🐾

Just perched up there, judging the neighborhood, protecting her kingdom, and absolutely unbothered by the cold.

Honestly? 10/10 form. The HOA (Household of Aria) approves.

Today Aiden and Jason got snow days — something I tend to forget since my living room is my office. Not envious at all… 🙃❄️

Aiden spent the day living his best life playing video games, and Jason decided it was the perfect day to hunt. And sure enough, he came home with a young buck.

The dogs were thrilled with their deer legs and rib bones, and the three of us processed the rest together and got everything bagged for the freezer. All in all, we ended up with about 75 pounds.

It’s always sad to take a life, but we’re grateful for the animal’s sacrifice and thankful to be able to feed our family this way. ❤️

I wish I knew which of my girls were giving me the brown speckled eggs! 🤦‍♀️
I’ve got my green speckled narrowed down to either Skipper or Lucky, but those brown beauties? A complete mystery.

Still SO pretty though — I’ll take the egg-citement. 🥚✨💛

We had our manners class tonight and Miss Aria showed up READY to impress. 💁‍♀️🐾

We worked on our stays — and let me tell you, she is absolutely crushing it! Gold star student in that department. ⭐️

Loose leash walking with distractions… well… that’s where we need a liiittle more practice. 🤣 My girl has zero ability to say no to food. If someone 30 feet away even THINKS about having a treat, she is already halfway there.

But umbrellas? Walkers? Crazy hats? Wheelchairs? Not even a blink. This young lady is unbothered and unstoppable. 👑

So proud of her progress 💪🐶💜 Jason Williamson Christy Ann Williamson

This right here…
If my dogs did nothing else except protect their property, their flock, and their family, I’d still be absolutely elated. 🐾💪

Someone in a group recently claimed—very confidently, I might add—that “dogs don’t naturally protect, it’s a trained behavior.”

Oh really? Because what you’re looking at in these pictures is exactly that: instinct.
A Cane Corso was bred for generations to guard, watch, assess, and protect. It’s written into their DNA. This isn’t something I taught—this is who they are.

And let’s not forget my Cardigan Welsh Corgi — the faithful little worker who historically served as a cattle dog, a vigilant family guardian, a fearless pest exterminator, and a loyal companion. That instinct to watch, protect, and manage his territory? Also completely natural.

My dogs take their jobs seriously… and honestly, they’re doing it beautifully. 🖤🐓🌲
