What a happy ending! Shadow presented to us with concerns of pain and straining when trying to urinate- X-rays and ultrasound showed that he had a bladder stone & was experiencing urethral obstruction. Blocked cats are always an emergency & Shadow’s mom knew he needed care immediately! He was ‘unblocked’ with a urinary catheter and then taken to surgery where Dr. Russett performed a cystotomy procedure to remove the stone from his bladder.
These cases are still complicated & kitties are always at risk of re-obstructing in the post operative period & that was the case for Shadow as well. He was seen again for ongoing care & we even teamed up with our colleagues at the emergency hospital, because he needed round-the-clock care for a few more days. But Shadow and his mom are fighters!! We are SO HAPPY to be able to share his case now & report that he’s made a full recovery! This sweet boy will remain on a prescription diet lifelong & continue to be spoiled rotten by mom, as he should be!

If you meet Dr. Velez this summer, give her a warm Court Street Vet welcome!

Dr. Katie Velez joined Court Street Veterinary Hospital in June of 2025. She is a New Hampshire native, attending the University of New Hampshire for her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science focusing on Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Velez worked hard to graduate a semester early in order to pursue a lifelong dream of working in South Africa! She interned with the Cheetah Conservation Foundation and volunteered for a game reserve, supporting Africa’s animal conservation efforts.

After returning to the States, she earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine, graduating from both Washington State University and Utah State University.

Dr. Velez has spent her career focused on small animal medicine and loves working with your dogs & cats; She strives to provide compassionate and quality medicine to the pets of the Monadnock region. Her professional interests include urgent care and emergency medicine. Dr. Velez lives with her husband and 3 young children on a small family farm! They have 2 dogs, 5 cats, 3 goats, and two horses- though this list is ever changing and often includes chickens, sheep and pigs that belong to her family on their nearby farm. When she is not at the office she enjoys spending time with her family. She is an avid fitness enthusiast, and loves riding her horses whenever she can find a moment to spare!
