We were contacted today about a dog that had been seen for several days roaming a neighborhood that would run when approached. The dog had never been seen by neighbors before but was caught on several security cameras overnight and seemed to be traveling a long creek.
Over lunch we set up a feeding station and cameras where the pup found food the night prior. Within a few short hours the dog appeared on camera and found the feeding station.
After work, we dropped a 72-inch trap at our feeding station in hopes that the dog would return before the storm. A short time later pup was seen approaching the trap, however, there was quite a bit of foot traffic (kiddos, bikes, scooters, people etc...) and pup became scared and ran the opposite direction. We found him again hiding a few blocks away and attempted to push him back towards the trap. We were at least 200 yards away and the second he saw us he bolted even farther. He crossed a busy road and once again hid near a tree line.
With the big storm coming, we made the choice to move the trap to his location vs waiting for him to return. We do not typically use this approach once they have found the food. We quickly relocated the trap from the original feeding station to his new hidey spot and dropped it about 400 yards from him. He watched us bait the trap and we quickly left the area after setting it live so that he would not feel threatened and investigate the trap.
His new hidey spot was more isolated, and once we left the area he mustered up the courage to approach the trap. He (or possibly a she) could not resist our yummy, smelly food and finally entered the trap and is now safe before the storm.
Pup is safe at KCPP. Unsure of s*x. Pup will be scanned for a chip once he/she decompresses a bit.
