Got a halter on this guy! Decided to brush the whole tail mat out while I had him caught and trimmed half of his hooves. He's always skeptical but at least he relaxed a bunch by the end.

This picture sums up my life during the winter. Chopping ice so the horses can have water. Some people complain about it, can't wait till spring when it's not cold, don't have to deal with the extra work. I actually enjoy it. I get to check on my horses every day, sometimes several times a day. I'm spending quality time with them, building our relationship even if it's just a few quick minutes, giving scritches, checking for injuries, untangle some mane or tail, pick up a hoof etc. I value those interactions even if it doesn't look like much. Also I really like chopping things with my splitting maul! There's a season for everything. Enjoy the one you're in right now.

Went for a short ride the other day. It wasn't great weather so the rest of the group didn't end up coming. My main riding horse does good by himself. But he is used to riding with a group the last few years. He hollered a lot on the ride. Always moving forward if a little stiffly but nothing unusual. Then I decided that since we were by ourselves lets go off trail. They were blocked by down trees anyway for half of the ride. I noticed something the hollering stopped. He had to think about his feet and navigating jack piles logs everywhere, not about if there were any other horses around that he could have company with. I also noticed that he was much more responsive to my riding ques. I don't have everything thought out all the way but it's something I'm going to keep track of. If a horses brain has something to think about does it stay more connected to it's rider? Is it worried less about being by itself?

Huge step forward Tuesday! After Monday feeling like it was a few steps backwards. We achieved lots of touch with my hands, scratches on both sides of the body. Also got lots of towards me movement from the neck rope/pressure exercise. Super stoked with the progress!!

Over the weekend I was able to work with "Wild One" multiple times. We have progressed to lots of nose touches on my hands and arms, face is still a bit scary. He Is occasionally coming towards me a few steps in the arena on our stretch walks.
