Hawaii Rainbow Rangers updated their address.
Hawaii Rainbow Rangers wants to extend a big congratulations to Lauren Nickerson on her new role as CEO at Hawaii Island Humane Society.
Over the last year HIHS has been a critical transfer partner for HRR and Laurens involvement and relentless motivation to work collaboratively has been crucial in our goal to help the animals and people in need on the big island.
Congratulations again and we look forward to the great new things to come from HIHS!
We’re thrilled to share that the HIHS Board of Directors has named its current Chief Operations Officer Lauren Nickerson as Chief Executive Officer.
Lauren was hired in January 2019 and served previously as Community Programs Director and Chief Operating Officer for Hawai‘i Island Humane Society before being named CEO. She graduated from the University of Hawai‘i Mānoa with honors and holds a master’s degree in Education from Harvard University.
“Lauren’s education and expertise in shelter operations, coupled with her knowledge and experience, has made her the ideal candidate for this position. No one is more dedicated to the Hawai‘i Island Humane Society’s mission and success of our operation than Lauren,” said HIHS President Adam Atwood.
Lauren first became involved with the HIHS in 2016 when she and her husband adopted a blind and deaf dog named Pearl. Many of you may know Pearl from her Instagram @shrimpy.and.friends. Lauren and her husband share their lives with Pearl, their three other rescue dogs, and two rescue bunnies.
We’re excited about the progress we’ve made at the Hawai‘i Island Humane Society. We’re utilizing modern, science-based training techniques to help shelter animals thrive. We’re making great strides and I’m happy to report that the Hawai‘i Island Humane Society has an Average Live Release rate of 95%.
Lauren replaces interim CEO Dr. Beth Jose, who is remaining on as our veterinarian for the Animal Community Center and the Waggin’. We are so incredibly thankful to Dr. Beth for her dedication and hard work in getting HIHS through the last 18 months. We are deeply grateful that she will remain an important part of our team.
Alyssa Tabert has been promoted to Director of Lifesaving Operations. Alyssa previously served as Lifesaving Programs Coordinator at the Animal Community Center and has helped many of you find your forever friend. She will now oversee daily operations and continue the development of our lifesaving work.
Please join us in congratulating Lauren and Alyssa, and in celebrating Dr. Beth.

This Friday marks the end of Animal Control Officer appreciation week. It’s hard to explain how unique and challenging but rewarding the job of an Officer in Animal Welfare can be.
So to help shine a light on the awesome work they do we want you to meet Joey!
Little Joey is a 4 month old goat that somehow found a way to fall through a hole less than 2 feet wide and into a cesspit. 10 feet down and stuck in a ledge for hours and with an owner worried sick there was little that could be done beyond hours of digging and breaking lava rock.
Enter Michael Orr, who was willing to dive “head first” to solve the problem and save Joey. With no respirator available for emergency purchase (thanks Covid-19) going into the pit would be incredibly toxic and dangerous.
With the help of HFD, some ingenuity, and the refusal to let Joey perish Officer Orr was able to safely get get an extendable loop fashioned to grab and pull out Joey safely!
Great Job Officer Orr! We’re sure Joey appreciated it!
All of us at HRR extend a thank you to the work of our officers who continue to do whatever they can to help the Animals, People, and Ohana’s of Hawaii.
Interested in how you can help officers like Officer Orr and animals like Joey? Visit www.hipets.org/donate to help equip our officers with the training and equipment to make more stories like this have a happy ending!

***FOSTERS NEEDED***
Spring is upon us and so is Kitten Season - so we are in desperate need of fosters able to take in kittens or puppies.
Shelters can be dangerous places for vulnerable babies that need specialized time and attention, so we rely on incredible foster parents like you to provide safe, loving households and the care these babies need to grow up big and strong so they can find their forever homes.
If you're interested in becoming a foster parent please email [email protected] or check out our website at https://www.hipets.org/foster for more information.

***UPDATE: Foster Found***
But there are plenty of other beautiful dogs at our shelter looking for a foster or adopter!🐾💕

We've been receiving questions lately as to what the adoption process at HRR actually looks like. So to help we've created a simple infographic to help explain how!

Aloha Big Island Ohana!
Beginning Monday, March 15th, 2021, our Kona location will be undergoing some much-needed renovations. This work is expected to last about three weeks. As you all know, shelters are inherently stressful environments on our fur companions, but adding construction to the mix will inevitably be more challenging for both the humans and animals involved. We now turn to you, our amazing supporters, to help us during this time. We are trying to get as many animals as possible off-site and into foster for the duration (or even portion) of construction. We have cats and dogs available to foster (or adopt!) of all ages, sizes, and breeds and staff are eager to help you find the perfect match for your home and family.
If you are willing to take on one or more animals to foster during this renovation period, it would be a tremendous help! We understand that some of you may already be maxed out with foster/personal rescues, but if you know of anyone who may be interested in helping us during this time, please pass along the word and send them to this link https://www.hipets.org/foster to fill out an application or have them reach out to the HRR Staff.
For those of you interested in fostering some animals during this time, please contact the Kona shelter at 808-731-5334 or our foster department at 818-538-9474 and know how many and what kind of animal you can take into foster.
Mahalo nui! We couldn't do this without your support.
Hawaii Rainbow Rangers is the Animal Services provider for the Island of Hawaii. Our shelter located in Kona offers dog, cat and other pet adoptions. The mission of HRR is to save 90% of the animals entering the shelter system.

**❤️Foster Found❤️**
Located: HRR Keaau Shelter
Animal ID: HRR-A-2086
This little man came to us as a stray on 3/5 and is in need of a foster until he gains a bit more weight and becomes available for adoption. He’s currently only 1.6 lbs and approximately 1.5 months old. Animals at this age and size are vulnerable in shelters and are too young for spay/neuter. He’s eating well and appears in good shape but just needs a little more time to get ready for his furever home.
If you are a current foster with HRR please contact us if you are interested at [email protected]
Interested in becoming a foster? Visit our website at www.hipets.org
Our Keaau location currently has over 13 dogs ready for their new home and ready to go home today! Including some staff favorites like Panda, Bud, Snickers, & Olive (pictured here).

Aloha!
Due to severe weather, our East Side location at Bar-King Dog Kennels in Keaau will be closed today (Saturday, February 27th). We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and look forward to serving you soon.

Hawaii Rainbow Rangers is excited to announce the next step in our services for the east side of Hawaii County.
Effective immediately the Hawaii Rainbow Rangers is migrating all services to a new location in Keaau, HI.
This collaboration with Bar-King Dog Kennels, located at 16-1900 35th Avenue, Keaau, HI 96749, will drastically increase the accessibility of services to the community.
Adoptable animals are now front and center with over 5 play/interaction yards to help new adopters interact in a safe and fun manner with dogs and our wonderful cats can now easily be viewed in large condo housing!
This new location also will allow other vital services like dog licensing, microchipping, and stray intake to be even more accessible.
The new interim location will be open to the public between the hours of 11am – 4pm, closed Tuesdays. Tuesdays only stray intakes are accepted to allow us time to focus on giving our shelter population a clean and sanitized environment.
We are also excited to announce great new volunteer and foster opportunities at this location. We are now actively seeking volunteers for dog walkers & cat cuddlers, creative volunteers to help photograph all our population, adoption counselors, and much more! (Check out the volunteer page to signup)
This location will maintain as our primary services location as we continue to develop our brand new and final shelter location for the east side located in Keaau (more details will be provided soon).
If you’re interested in being a part of the evolution of Animal Services in Hawaii County and want to help get us to our goal of making Hawaii County a lifesaving community, consider becoming an HRR Champion and become a direct influence on the advancement of HRR’s mission.
