❓ Is the tail carriage on the left normal ❓

The answer is no. Tail carriage can be an important indicator of pain. Horses tend to bend in the direction of their discomfort. Think of it as a guarding mechanism. Muscle tension is the body’s way of protecting vulnerable areas, which may have underlying pathology. In this case, this mare carries her tail to the right. She has visible changes of her R lumbar region and obvious damage to her thoracolumbar fascia as it ties into the ilium. All of these findings were documented on ultrasound examination. With one treatment, we have already seen dramatic improvement in her movement, tail carriage, but also in her behavior. She has now entered a tailored rehabilitation program. We expect to see her continue to progress as she becomes more biomechanically sound. Her tail carriage should return to full time normal positioning.

Remember, the signs that your horse may be in pain are often subtle and easily overlooked. Minor details matter and we want to hear about them. We collectively put all the pieces of information together to create a biomechanical performance report for your horse. This report is a comprehensive list of findings including a plan of treatment and rehabilitation program.

Reminder:
We have received news that several other equine veterinarians who service our area have left private practice in the recent weeks. Before this news, we were booking out 3-4 weeks for routine visits. More extensive visits are booking 5-6 weeks out in most cases. We must also consider that emergencies happen, and those take priority. Pictured below is one of those 7 emergencies that have occurred over the last week. Dr. Smith did a beautiful job repairing this wound. Thank you Dr. Smith!

We post this to remind you to be kind to your equine vet. Please call ahead to schedule routine visits. We are doing our very best to help every horse we can. This heat is adding another layer of difficulty to our jobs. We appreciate your patience.
