We are so excited that Wainscott Farms will also be providing eggs at the Market on the 11th!! Now there will be more than enough eggs for everyone 🫶🏻🫶🏻

I went to Louisville today to check out the farmers market at The Train Depot. Looks like there's a huge demand for eggs, so I'm adding more dates at this market. My original plan was to start on May 18th, but now I'm adding May 11th and will probably be adding a lot more Sundays. So if you're in the Louisville area and need fresh eggs, keep an eye on this page for a full list of dates when I'll be there.

Come see us at .train.depot from 11-4 today for the farmers market!

Let’s talk hen biology! 🥚 Contrary to popular belief, hens don’t need a rooster to lay eggs. Laying is a natural part of their reproductive cycle, triggered by daylight hours and maturity. A rooster’s role is solely for fertilization – meaning if you want baby chicks, you’ll need a rooster. Otherwise, those delicious eggs are all hen power! 💪🐔

Ever wonder why some chickens love a good cuddle? It’s all about trust and personality! Chickens that feel safe with their humans often enjoy being held—it’s like a warm hug for them. Breeds like Silkies or those raised with lots of TLC tend to be extra snuggly. Plus, it’s a great way for them to feel secure and bond with you! 🥰

Ever heard of bumblefoot? It’s something us chicken keepers keep an eye out for! It’s basically a bacterial infection that can give our feathered friends swollen, sore feet, and sometimes make them limp. Usually, it starts from little cuts or rough spots from their environment. The good news is, catching it early and giving them some TLC can make a big difference in survival rate and recovery time. Think deep cleaning, infection removal, a bit of antiseptic, and definitely a vet visit if it looks serious. And hey, a clean coop goes a long way in keeping those little feet happy and healthy! 🐔❤️

🌱 Don’t toss those cracked eggshells from your coop! 🥚✨ Here are 3 ways to repurpose them:
1️⃣ Boost your garden - Crush clean shells for calcium-rich fertilizer.
2️⃣ Deter pests - Scatter sharp pieces to keep slugs away.
3️⃣ Get crafty - Use as seed starters or for mosaics.
🚿 Rinse thoroughly to avoid bacteria then bake those egg shells before using!

Check out this beauty with her floppy comb! 🥰

That fleshy crest on a chicken’s head isn’t just for show—it’s called a comb, and its shape, size, and even floppiness can tell us a lot about the bird. But why do some chickens have those adorable floppy combs? Here’s the scoop from the coop:
1️⃣ Genetics at Play: The shape of a chicken’s comb is largely determined by its breed. Some breeds, like Silkies or certain Leghorns, are known for having single combs that can grow large and flop over due to their size. It’s a natural trait passed down through generations! 🧬
2️⃣ Age and Hormones: As hens age, their combs can become larger and more prone to flopping, especially in breeds with single combs. Hormonal changes, like those during egg-laying cycles, can also affect comb size and texture, making them more likely to droop. 🕰️
3️⃣ Health and Environment: A floppy comb can sometimes signal a chicken’s health or environmental conditions. If a chicken is dehydrated, stressed, or not getting enough nutrients, its comb might lose firmness and flop over. On the flip side, a large, floppy comb can also be a sign of a healthy, well-fed bird—it’s all about balance! 🌡️🥚
4️⃣ Temperature Regulation: Combs help chickens regulate their body temperature. In hot weather, blood flows through the comb to release heat, which can make it swell and flop more. In colder climates, combs might shrink to conserve heat. Nature’s air conditioning at work! ☀️❄️
5️⃣ Just Their Style: Let’s be real—some chickens rock a floppy comb because it’s their signature look!

Ever wondered what’s really inside that egg you’re about to crack open or incubate? Let’s talk about why checking eggs is so important!
On the left, you see an egg under normal light—looks pretty standard, right? But on the right, under a candling light, you can see what’s happening inside: blood vessels, development, or even potential issues like cracks or abnormalities. 🩺🔦
Here’s why checking eggs matters:
1️⃣ Quality Control: For consumers, candling helps ensure eggs are fresh, free of cracks, and safe to eat. No one wants a bad egg in their breakfast! 🍳
2️⃣ Hatching Success: If you’re incubating eggs (like for chickens or other poultry), candling lets you monitor embryo development and spot any problems early—like infertile eggs or early mortality. 🐣
3️⃣ Safety First: Identifying issues like blood spots or contamination can prevent health risks, especially in commercial egg production.
4️⃣ Sustainability: For farmers, checking eggs ensures better hatch rates, reducing waste and supporting ethical farming practices. 🌱
Candling is a simple, non-invasive way to peek inside an egg using a bright light. It’s been used for centuries and is still a go-to method for egg producers and hatchery enthusiasts alike. So next time you’re handling eggs—whether for cooking or hatching—take a moment to check them. It could make all the difference! 💡🥚
