We Proudly Announce that our Foundation female Olympia Von der Stadtrand at age 11 has been selected as the ideal example of the German Shepherd Breed!
The Comparative Genetics Laboratory at UW School of Veterinary Medicine will be using Olympia’s DNA to create a high-quality reference genome. The current reference genome for all genetic research in dogs is based on a Boxer, which can make research using other breeds difficult. Having a GSD reference will allow them to perform the best science that they can to understand the genetic basis of disease in the GSD.
PacBio recently published a blog post with more information about our sequencing project: https://www.pacb.com/blog/german-shepherd-genome/. They also tweeted our thank you video--But, since we are far more active here than on Twitter, we've posted it here for you all to enjoy as well! Thanks again to all of our supporters! We will keep you updated as this project progresses! :)
