Hydration is key!!

🧂 Salt for Horses in Winter — Don’t Skip It! ❄️🐴

As the colder months arrive, many horses drink less, their gut slows down, and the risk of impaction colic increases.
One of the easiest ways to support them is daily salt.

⭐ Why salt is essential:

Encourages regular drinking

Supports hydration, gut motility, muscle & nerve function

Helps prevent impaction colic

Balances electrolytes when on hay

🧂 How much salt?

For a 500kg horse:

1–2 tablespoons (15–30g) per day

Light work → ~15g

Moderate work → ~30g

Heavy sweat → add an electrolyte mix on top.

👉 This is in addition to free-choice access to a salt lick (horses rarely lick enough to meet needs) or free choice loose salt can work if you can keep it dry.

🧊 Winter hydration tip:

Salt + slightly warmed water = a big increase in drinking.
Most horses drink 30–40% more when water isn’t icy cold.

⭐ What type of salt? (Here’s the truth, simple & final!)

Honestly?
Use whatever salt your horse will reliably eat.
The body only cares about the sodium + chloride, not the colour of the rock.

Plain table salt → perfect, affordable, consistent.

Sea salt / Himalayan → also fine, but the “extra minerals” are minor and don’t replace a balancer.

Loose salt works better than blocks for accurate intake.

Avoid flavoured salts or low-sodium salts.

👉 The main thing is consistency, not brand, colour, or marketing.

For transparency. As an equine body worker and horse feed dealer we are taking all the precautions.

If you come for feed please pull in by the shop and then back out the drive. If you have horses on the trailer please for sure back out the drive instead of using the tear drop to turn around. I will back you out if need be.

If you need a horse worked on please park by the house / shop and I will come out to you ready with a fresh set of clothes freshly disinfected and then proceed to wash those clothes after doing body work. I will do my best to have all the dogs put up as well.

Disinfectant wipes and nixall are being used on everything between horse activities around here as well as disinfecting our boots and changing boots.
My washer machine has been and will be busy.

I havent been out of state but have been to the local barrel jackpots of which i know some of the horses in passing and warming up have been in TX recently so we are checking temps and boosting the immune system and staying home.

What a great change of pase for you to have some 1 on 1 horse time. It’s a great time to massage and stretch your horse also slow down and get them back to the basics while riding.

Along with DPN Alfalux pellets and Protect we have been using ActivateQi wellness.
Hauling, jackpots, training, all day ropings, multiple events, kids riding, high pressure situations, etc…..we use the Relentless for the gut!!! Respire was a staple all summer combating the dry and dusty weather. Relax is what I use for the kids horses and my anxious colts.
This fall we have started Knockout for a full parasite cleanse and we will go with Reverse and Respond next to do the full body cleanse!!

This year the yellow mare has pulled triple duty, peewee barrel horse, back up barrel horse for friends, #1 head horse, and ranch horse. She survived West Nile as a 3 year old and so her muscles are a concern. Since being on ActivateQI her mind has leveled out better and she doesn’t get as muscle sore on me.
