Quick Facts:
Breed: Lab mix
Gender: Male; neutered
Age: 6 months!
Size: 45 pounds (might be 70 when finished growing!)
Good with…
Dogs? Yes!
Cats? Yes!
Kids? Yes! (most experience with 10+)

History
I was born in a litter of 7 in November 2025, was surrendered by our owner to a shelter in January 2026, and I got adopted by my current family in February. There are 3 kids and 2 adults in my current home and I’ve been learning and playing with them since then! I got to take the AKC STAR Puppy training course through Ithaca Dog Training Club and passed the skills test at the end to earn my ribbon! I’m a smart puppy!

Personality
I love people! I love to be petted and paid attention to, and everyone loves to pet me! I give sweet little licks/kisses to everyone in the morning to say “Hello! So glad you’re here!” I have cute ridges of fur at the nape and sides of my neck and along my legs, and my ears are both up and floppy. I love to be cuddled and kissed when I am calm (not as much when I am in play-mode).

I have an exuberance for life, and I love seeing what you’re up to, following you around, joining in when I can and also going for outdoor adventures in the yard and on leashed walks. I am a fantastic blend of “happy to be active but also happy to chill out with you!”

I am great with dogs of all sizes and personalities! In my puppy class, I played super nicely with all of the dogs there, even the ones that other pups were scared of. I love having doggy friends and would probably be over the moon to share my new home with another friendly dog!

I am also great with cats! Interested, curious, playful, with no aggression at all.
I am smart! I have learned a bunch of things like Sit, Lay Down, Stay, and Come. I have my own opinions about things sometimes (like what I want to do and not do), but as long as you use positive reinforcement strategies with me (i.e., reward me with treats and praise!), I will usually be happy to do what you ask. And bonus…I do not jump up on people! That is so rare for a pup of my age! When my family goes to work and school, I “crate up” (and get a yummy treat) and even though they are sometimes gone as long as 5 or 6 hours, I make it without trouble. And am so excited when they return!

I like being outdoors! My short fur makes cold weather “BRRRRRR!” but having a jacket or sweater helps a lot! Playing in the snow is fun as long as I have a good coat! When my favorite buddy in the family, the 10-year-old boy, plays outside on his swing, I play alongside him by grabbing onto a hanging rope or by chewing on sticks! We are a great team! When he runs, I run alongside him, and we go as fast as we can. It is so much fun to run and to jump, I think I’d enjoy doing agility classes and I bet I would be good at it!
I am still a puppy, so naturally interact a lot by using my mouth. I have NEVER bitten any person or animal, but need to keep improving my mouth skills, getting gentler and gentler over time. It’s hardest when I’m excited (like when the 10-year-old is laughing and wrestling with me) or when I am overtired, but I am getting better all the time.

My favorite games are “Chew!” (on ropes, on toys, on stuffed animals) and “Chase!” (balls or rope toys, or you, or anything you throw). And unlike some dogs, I always give you the ball back so you can throw it again! Mental stimulation is really fun and great for me, so if you want to teach me tricks (using treats of course), let’s do it!
I am excellent in the car! I don’t get any car sickness and I sleep easily!

Cohabitation
I love my people and love meeting new people. I am a teensy bit shy with strangers, but warm up immediately when they show their kindness.
When my family went out of town a few times, I stayed with friends of theirs who had kids and dogs and adjusted really well!
I am fantastic with dogs of all types!
I live with two young indoor cats who I am perfectly fine with, though they are having a hard time adjusting to me. They mostly stay on a different floor and run or hiss when they see me, but I have been nothing but friendly. I’m just confused about why they don’t want to be friends!
My favorite person, besides my Mom, is the 10-year-old boy in the family. I sleep in his room, usually in his bed or on his floor at night with the door shut. I’m sleeping from 9pm until 6 or 7am now!

Favorite Activities
Going on adventures to walk in new places!
Exploring around my yard to watch birds, insects, and use my very good nose!
Playing with stuffed and squeaking toys!
Running alongside you!
Joining you for a rest on the couch!
Doing what you ask me to do, for a treat!

Why I am looking for a new home
I am a bigger and more active dog than some of my family want, and the two cats in my home aren’t adjusting to me being here, no matter how friendly I am to them. So the family decision is to find me a great new home, with folks who will love my size and activity level and smarts, and where maybe there is even another dog in the home to play with, or maybe friendly cats who like dogs!
Medical
I am in great health, am up to date on all vaccines, and take flea/tick and heartworm preventive medicine.

Summary
I’m sad that I will have to leave my current family as they have been so fun and good to me. However, I know that I can meet new people who are kind, loving, and fun! As a youngster, I need continued kind, loving, positive guidance so I can keep learning better manners and adult dog behaviors. It would be exciting to have a dog friend in the house or any animals that might help keep me company when the people are away or busy! I am a very loyal and treat-motivated puppy who tries hard and cares so much to be good. I am finally consistently going potty outside (but of course will have accidents in the first few weeks when I go to my new home, like most all dogs do)!

Browncoat Cat Rescue has been saving lives for over a decade.
BCR exists as a network of foster homes, and so we are limited in how many cats we can take in by existing foster families. While many are willing to open their hearts and homes, there are always more cats in need.

With a BCR specific land purchase we can create a multi-use space completely focused on the wellbeing of community cats. We plan a Sanctuary space for cats who are unadoptable; a quarantine space for new intakes, space for TNR clinics to reduce pet overpopulation and a more traditional cage-less “shelter” space that can accommodate up to 10 adults and 10 kittens. This gives us more flexibility in who we can take in, and would allow us to save more cats and kittens who would otherwise be ineligible due to lack of space.

The land we want is 65k, and 15k makes us eligible for a land mortgage.

Let’s make this dream come true!

We share this every summer, please read and stay safe!

Please read this is you or your dog go in the water!
Written by a CDR volunteer.

The water was cold, but all I could do was to go in with my dog. There was no question. There is never a question when we have the overwhelming love of our pets, that we will do whatever we need to, to love them comfort them and save them. We don’t think of ourselves, we think of the innocents.

Last night my overzealous retriever decided that she would hip butt the much more docile Bernese Mountain dog off the boat ramp that we use to enter our boat from the dock (all because she wanted to be first). The result? Score Golden Retreiver one and the Bernese zero. Baby happily made it into the boat first and really unfortunately Bear landed in the water, in between the back of the boat and the dock. He doesn’t like the water, his paws barely touch it when he sips water from the lake and he surely doesn’t swim. What does any Mom do when all they see is the face of their doggy underwater, you jump in with two feet to get his head above water.

Now what, I was all alone of the boat oh no, not on the boat, in the water by the boat balancing Bear on my thighs. Fortunately, I was able to brace my feet on the propeller and a metal plate. But, what’s your plan now? He weighs 85 pounds, he has a diaper on, because he incontinent. I am able to tie a rope around his collar, but I am not strong enough to push him up on to the lower platform. Macgyver where are you?? I just can’t think of any options. It’s too far to try to swim him to shore ( I am afraid we will both drown) and I am afraid to let him go. So, I resort to the only thing I can think of ’scream for help’. I was really really lucky some time later, I hear someone say I am coming, help is on the way. Long story short, someone up the hill had heard me and he was strong enough to lift the dog out of the water. The ordeal had lasted about 20 minutes. My hero, Leo, THANK you, for the bottom of my heart and my dog Bear. You saved my dog AND you saved me.

Summer is upon us, Please take my horror and make sure you have a plan for your dog. I purchased a life vest that he will wear now, whenever we are on the boat. Think about what you would do. Do you have a preserver you could put your dog paws on? How would you get your dog back in the boat? A sling perhaps?

Please think about your dog safety and your other boat companions. Start the trip with a safely briefing that everyone knows their job in the case of an emergency.

Bear says ‘know your plan, safety first”
Have a great summer.

Hello! My name is Bailey and I am the most adorable, playful dog around!

Quick Facts:
Breed: Shepherd- Hound mix
Gender: Female, spayed
Age: 3 years old
Size: Medium-to-large
Good with…
Dogs? Maybe!
Cats? Unknown
Kids? Yes!
History
I had a rough first year of life and was surrendered to Herkimer Humane Society before my current mom found me. I was very anxious at the shelter, apparently the people who surrendered me were NOT NICE folks, but life has been much, much better since I got adopted. Clearly, the people who had me when I was a puppy did not treat me kindly, which has left me very skittish with men until I get to know them. I have been in my new home for two years now and they have really helped me to become less anxious and to discover my fun side! The kids in the home keep me very excited and show me so much love. If I'm left alone, I still get anxious. I really enjoy the great outdoors and wherever my people are!

Personality

I am a very good girl. I have a mighty good reason to be scared of people since I was treated so badly as a puppy in my original home, but I yearn to trust and to love and to connect and I have made great strides in the last year now that I am in a safe home with caring people. I am naturally respectful to my humans, am ready for any adventure, and I’m never grumpy! I have a very cheerful and enthusiastic demeanor, I want to be happy and joyful and loving all the time, and as my fears are lessening, you can see that shining forth more and more.

I’m quirky about affection in that I LOVE some types of affection but feel uncomfortable about other types. I love ALL kinds of verbal affection and cheerful attention--being told what a good girl I am, how sweet I am, how much I am loved. I love happy-voices and seeing love and affection in your eyes. As for physical affection--I love snuggling in next to you on the couch, and I love it when mom lets me curl up in between her legs. I come up to my mom and lay my head and my paw on her leg, gently and sweetly asking if I can come up and snuggle in next to her (she says it is irresistible). Other times I give her the gentle, pleading puppy-dog-eyes and then do a slow-motion crawl up on her lap or onto the couch next to her. Like if I move slowly enough, she won’t notice or be disturbed! As for petting—I don’t like it as much! A little bit of brief petting occasionally is tolerable for me, but any more than that and I get up and walk away. The dog rescue folks wonder whether in that original not-nice home, if hands were only used to hit or punish me, leaving me very nervous about having human hands on my body. No matter the origin, the best way for my new people to help me gain trust would be to give me loads of verbal affection, and treats, and playtime to show me your love until I know and trust you very much (we’re talking maybe months), and then to very slowly introduce touch in brief amounts (a few seconds) followed by praise or treats!

I love playing with the kids in the house, I bark and jump around and make everyone laugh and laugh. But with my wonderful young dog energy, and lack of self-control training, when there is too much activity, I get a bit “wild child!” At those times, mom will gently and nicely help me go to my own space, where it is quieter and away from the bustling, noisy activity, so I can calm down.

I love playing tug of war and chewing on my bones and toys! I am a bit rascally when I get the rope away from you in a tug-of-war game, I think of every way possible to get you to chase me so I can play “keep away” with you! Hahaha!

I am a great “alert” pup in that I bark when people pull into the driveway or knock on the door. No one will sneak up on you with me on the job! If they come into the house and I know them—I am very happy and friendly. If I don’t know them, and they are female, I can warm up quickly, but if they are male, I will need your help, as I will feel very nervous. Best thing unknown men can do is keep a good distance away from me and totally ignore me—no eye contact, no approaching, no petting, no talking to me. Ignoring like that in “dog-world” means “I mean you no harm/I am not a threat” and that is helpful! Think of it this way…if you were in your house and some super scary seeming human came in, wouldn’t it make you feel a bit better if they totally ignored you (as opposed to focused very much on you)?

I love being outside, but since I am a good chewer, you CANNOT leave me tied up with a leash/rope because I will chew through it and run off! A metal coated dog run is fine though. Leashed walks are very exciting, I love them, but I do pull quite a lot, so a no-pull harness (like a Freedom Harness or Gentle Leader) would help a lot, as would positive reinforcement training. Because mom has her hands full minding the little kids on our walks, she has been unable to do leash training with me.
Normally, I sleep in the living room at night on my special couch. I am fully housebroken at all times except overnight for a few days after I have been at the boarding kennel. This is very common, and my mom just has me use a crate at night for a few days post-boarding.

Cohabitation

I love people once I know them! I love my mom, her family & friends and all of the kids in the house. I am terrific with kids as long as they respect me. I am around a lot of little kids all day and I love to give them kisses! Mom does not let them crawl on me or pull on me- I like that she respects and protects me!

Men make me nervous until I see them often and learn to trust them. I will growl, bark and back away or hide…I have NEVER come toward a man aggressively. I don’t want trouble, I am just really scared of men! I need you to insure that new men leave me alone and don’t make it even more terrifying by coming toward me or touching me, no matter how friendly their intentions! They can toss treats on the ground, but they have to toss them far away from them so I don’t have to come near them to get the treats! All the while, they should avoid looking at me please!

I only have a little bit of experience with other dogs. At the kennel I could hear them and they excited me but I didn’t get to play with them. At home, my aunt did a very unfortunate thing,..,.she wanted me to meet her dog so she put me on leash and let her dog come in our house off-leash (worst strategy ever!) and of course I felt super threatened and ended up giving him a nip to his nose. He wasn’t hurt and they ended that meeting (thank goodness)! With a proper introduction to a dog and opportunity to learn or hone my doggy social skills, I might do great, we just don’t have enough data to really know.

I haven’t spent any time with cats, I’m not sure how I will do with them.

Favorite Activities

-Snuggling up next to mom on the couch in the evening!
--Verbal affection from you! Your happy, loving attention!
-Being outdoors, going for a walk!
-Playing tug-of-war!
-Chewing on my bones and toys!

Why I am looking for a new home
I am looking for a new home because my family is going through a divorce and neither mom nor dad can take care of me on their own, given all of their other responsibilities.

Medical
I am a young healthy pup with no medical issues! I’m fully checked up, fully up to date on all shots. I do get very excited going to the vet so make sure you hold on tight.

Summary
We are hoping that Bailey will be in a home with a tremendous amount of love. She has been through so much in the first year of her life, now she knows what love is and there should be no lack of it. Bailey's ideal family would be one that has some experience with positive reinforcement training, will understand her quirks and value all of her amazing qualities, will take her on lots of walks, have space for her to play outside, and have the time and resources to train her so she can be her best and happiest self. They should have a fence system of some sort so she does not run off. She has great energy that she would love to share with another young dog but it needs to be the right fit.

Quiche Lorraine says "Once I know you, I’m a super lovey-dovey girl and an Olympic-level cuddler/snuggler, I LOVE lounging all over you! Basically, I’m a 65-pound lap dog. You can move over and make loads of space for me next to you, and I’m still aiming right for your lap! I am also a head leaner…I love leaning my head on anything nearby–your lap, chest, arm, the side of my bed, the arm rest, even your laptop! I don’t quite get this “personal space” thing, but I’m learning that when you say “Goodnight!” it’s time for me to curl up in my own bed. Which of course is near to your bed. I just really, really love being close to my people.

I’m a super curious girl—one of my nicknames is “Nosey Rosie” because I am fascinated to know everything about everything! If you’re doing something, I’ll be there watching, or sniffing, or trying to help you with it in my doggy way.

I’m food-motivated and smart, which means I learn quickly when I’m set up for success. I know how to “Sit” (especially at crosswalks!) and “Down,” and I’m working hard on “Look!” (at you) when we are out on walks. “Touch!” (your hand) gets me so excited I can get a little mouthy with excitement, but am learning how to manage that energy with gentle guidance from my moms. I respond best to positive reinforcement (treats!) and patience.

Want to know my favorite things in the world? Snuggling (obviously)!! And snack time! Dog cookies…of course! But…celery, carrots, peanut butter, and bananas? Yes, please! I also deeply love toys that squeak, crunch, or give me something to gnaw on.

There are also some things that I don’t like. 1) Being left home alone. Not a fan. It makes me nervous and sad, and I will need your help getting more comfortable with you being gone. I don’t destroy anything in the house (one reason why I do NOT need to be crated), but I’m scared and occasionally have an accident or chew up one of my own toys; 2) Crates are a hard no for me. They panic me and I will squeeze my way out, which is DANGEROUS. That’s how some dogs accidentally strangle themselves, I cannot be in a home where crating is required. 3) I get a little spooked by sudden movements or by people walking behind me without warning, which is why being around kids would be stressful for me/not a good fit. 4) My current moms think that I don’t like squirrels and rabbits, because I bark at them so much, but truth be told, it’s really fun to yell at them, haha!"

It is husky week here at CDR!

Juno says "Hello possible family member/s! If you are willing to invite me in, you’re in for a real treat & like my current foster family – you will never want me to leave!

I am incredibly friendly with every person and (domestic) animal that I greet. I REALLY LOVE having canine siblings! With people I joyfully verbalize “Hello!” and will lick your hand and excitedly anticipate a chance to play fetch or be active & adventurous with you in some way. I only occasionally jump up and quickly remember with a reminder from you to keep “down”. With animals I meet I do the usual doggie sniffs & then kindly propose playing with a down dog (yoga!) stance, an invitation to run, or I might find a toy and drop it in front of another dog to explore what we might do together!

As long as I have sufficient exercise, I can be content to lay around – preferably with you or my sibling/s nearby. If I am left alone I will express my displeasure with some very clear husky calls. And, while I’m mentioning it… if I am feeling excluded (like I’m outside and everyone else is inside) I have perfected what my current caregivers call a “sad sad whale call”. While I don’t prefer being alone, I am also ok with it. I am comfortable in my crate with a couple chew toys for up to 4 hours. It is unknown if I can be left free roaming in the house while you’re away!

It did not take me long to settle into life with my foster family. I’ve been here since mid-August and I have adopted all new routines; I can do this with you too! I sleep in my own bed (crate). And, although I will usually step out just to p*e in the morning and then go straight back to bed for a bit, I would also love to go for a run or play in the yard or have a brisk walk instead!

A few things I believe to be ridiculously adorable and/or skillful things about myself are: 1) When you’re standing around, I’ll suddenly appear between your legs, looking up at you, 2) I often say hello by bringing a toy, 3) You’ll be busy doing your thing and then realize I am curled up just behind you (I like to be close!), 4) I am pretty awesome at fetching and returning the object right to your feet… and 5) I am also getting pretty good at catching things in the air!"
