🐶 🐾 A Heartfelt Thank You! 🐾🐶

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who donated bags of dog food to the Lawrence County Animal Shelter. Because of your generosity, the dogs in our care will have full bellies while they wait for their forever homes.
Every bag donated makes a difference!
With the overwhelming number of dogs that come through our doors, food is one of our largest ongoing challenges and your support helps ensure they are being fed along with the extra treats!
Whether you donated a single bag, treats, or several bags, please know that your kindness directly impacts the lives of homeless animals in our community. We are blessed to have people who are caring and compassionate standing with us.
From all the wagging tails and grateful paws, thank you for making a difference. ❤️🐾

When making appointments
They need you to keep your commitment as they only have limited space available for each scheduled surgery date

Spaying and Neutering your pet is the best way to prevent future medical issues as well as controling pet over population.
Medical issues that can arrise in unaltered pets can be life threatening & very expensive to treat.

The most common health risk in unaltered females is mammory cancer. These malignant tumors are hormone driven and can metastasize to other organs if left untreated. The surgery itself can also be very costly and recovery time for the pet is much longer than a normal spay. Spaying also eliminates the risk of pyometra (an infected uterus) completely.

Neutering males reduces the risk of non-cancerous prostate disorders, perianal fistulas, testicular cancer and reduces the risk of diabetes.

We care about all of our communities animals. We want the longest healthiest
lives for them all 🐾

Do you All remember Leon?
A young stray hit by a car
He is now fully recovered and ready to be adopted!! Look at him Glowing!

From his foster family 👇

“This is Leon (aka "Leo") a one year old handsome male dog whom we have fostered for three months. He was hit by a vehicle in mid February and his right front leg was broken. He was placed with us/foster care immediately after his leg surgery in order to avoid returning him to a stressful, over crowded local shelter. He has since fully recovered & has been neutered.

Leo weighs fifty lbs and is an exuberant, energetic puppy who loves to play hard with our two dogs, go for walks, car rides, but mostly hanging around the house staying close to where ever the action seem to be.

We have had a lot of dogs over the years and Leo has been one of the easiest. People who have interacted with him have repeatedly used "well adjusted" to describe him. We like it that he responds appropriately when told "no."

He would definitely be best in a home with at least one other dog to play with, show him the ropes and help burn off that abundant puppy energy! If the two other dogs tire out and need a break, Leo has been quite content to entertain himself with his dog toys.

Leon is curious about everything but not adventuresome, can be mildly timid with strangers and will briefly bark at expected noises but is generally a quiet, very observant dog.

He is lovingly playful with humans, dogs & likes the cats more than they like him. He would be okay with older children, but younger, smaller children would be at risk of being knocked down when he plays. He is STRONG. Leo is not crate trained.

Similar to our other two dogs, he uses disposable p*e pads inside or goes when supervised outside. It should be an easy transition to fenced in yard with maybe a doggy door.

Leo walks satisfactorily on a leash and likes to stay close to his family/pack! He knows "sit" and "down" and "wait" and is working on other commands.

We feel he will be most happy with a person or family who is active and loves the outdoors. He would not be a good fit for a small apartment.

We would consider failing at fostering if Leo was less energetic, older, smaller and less strong (we are in our 70s). However, we are planning to keep him here until a good home is found and will meet interested adopters at the shelter, dog park or at their home.”

Please DM us with any questions or to set up a time to meet sweet Leon 🐾 💛
And a big thank you to all who supported his journey and helped us get here!

WE NEED YOUR HELP!
OUR KENNELS ARE FULL!

Right now, our shelter is at a breaking point.
We have worked tirelessly to maintain our “no-kill status”something we are incredibly proud of but we are facing a serious challenge.

The calls are not stopping…..
Stray dogs…neglected dogs…dogs with nowhere to go.

And the hardest part?
We don’t have the space to help them.

Every kennel that stays full means another dog out there…
• Running scared on the streets
• Suffering from neglect or illness
• Waiting for someone, anyone, to step in

💔 We cannot say “yes” to saving them if we have nowhere to put them….

🐾 THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN 🐾

We are urgently asking our community:

👉🏻 ADOPT - Give a dog a second chance at life
👉🏻 FOSTER - Open your home temporarily and literally save a life
👉🏻 SHARE - Help us reach someone who can help

Even fostering for a short time creates space for us to bring in another dog in need.
One open kennel = one life saved.

🙏🏼We have done everything we can on our end, stretching staff, space, and resources….but we cannot do this alone….

This is not just a shelter issue…

If you have ever thought about adopting…
If you have ever considered fostering…
NOW is the time.

Please contact us today or come visit the shelter.
Come meet these dogs. They are waiting, hoping, and deserving a chance.

Because right now…
THEIR future depends on us - all of us.

The members of VFW Post 8850 are no strangers to supporting the animals at the Lawrence County shelter! Their organization has continuously stepped up to donate and provide for animals in need through their support of the Lawrence County Humane Society.
Many people do not realize how much it takes to care for shelter animals. From daily supplies and food to veterinary expenses and medical care, the needs are ongoing. Organizations like the VFW understand those challenges and continue to make a real difference for the animals in our care.
A special thank you to Robbie Cornell for taking the time to stop by the shelter, talk about your organization, and share how much the veterans support shelter animals and our mission.
The Ironton VFW Post 8850 is well known for its dedication to serving veterans and strengthening the community, and we are truly grateful for their continued compassion and generosity toward the animals at the shelter. ❤️🐾
