⚠️ GDV / Bloat Awareness — Please Read ⚠️

After experiencing GDV (bloat) for the first time in my 33 years of owning Basset Hounds, I feel compelled to share our story in hopes of raising awareness and helping others recognize the signs early. When it comes to GDV, quick action can truly mean the difference between life and death.

On Friday evening, we arrived home and began letting Marleigh outside to potty when we immediately noticed something wasn’t right. She suddenly stopped and began trying to vomit. While gagging or bile isn’t unusual for a Basset, this time nothing came up at all.

She refused to go outside and seemed confused—almost as if she didn’t recognize her surroundings, despite living in our home her entire life. She continued to dry heave repeatedly with absolutely nothing coming up, along with excessive drooling and white foam. She wasn’t crying or whining, and her stomach did not appear swollen like I had always heard happens with bloat.

Still, I knew in my gut something was very wrong.

We immediately left for the emergency veterinary hospital. The first clinic had to turn us away due to not having a surgeon available if it was bloat. Thankfully, a second emergency hospital was only minutes away.

Upon arrival, Marleigh was taken straight back for triage and X-rays. Within minutes, our worst fear was confirmed—Marleigh was suffering from GDV (bloat).

Our only two options were immediate emergency surgery or euthanasia.

Because we caught it early, Marleigh is expected to make a full recovery. She thankfully had no internal damage or dead tissue. We were incredibly fortunate.

🚨 Common GDV / Bloat Warning Signs 🚨

Not every dog will show all of these symptoms:

• Repeated dry heaving or gagging with nothing coming up
• Excessive drooling or foamy saliva
• Restlessness or pacing
• Confusion or acting “off”
• Refusing to walk, eat, or go outside
• A tight or distended abdomen (this may not always be present)
• Rapid decline over a short period of time

If you ever suspect bloat, do not wait. This is a true emergency.

🩺 Prevention & Preparedness Matters 🩺

I cannot stress this enough: when you have your dog spayed or neutered, please strongly consider having a gastropexy done at the same time. This procedure tacks the stomach in place and can be life-saving, significantly reducing the risk of GDV.

I also cannot emphasize enough the importance of pet insurance, even if it’s a higher-deductible policy. Please research whether a policy pays the hospital directly or requires you to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement—this detail matters immensely in an emergency.

Marleigh’s final bill was nearly $7,000 for surgery and approximately 25 hours of hospitalization. While this cost is extremely high, emergency situations—especially on weekends—often leave emergency veterinary hospitals as the only option.

❤️ Our Message to Fellow Dog Owners ❤️

Trust your instincts. If something feels wrong, act immediately—even if the signs don’t look exactly like what you’ve read or heard about. Time is critical with GDV.

♥️🐾I’m sharing our personal experience in hopes that it helps another family be better prepared, ask the right questions ahead of time, recognize the warning signs early, and possibly save a precious life.

Please share this information.
It truly matters. 🐾

🛑⚠️❌⚠️🛑❌ Scam Alert 🛑⚠️❌⚠️🛑❌

Unfortunately, it was brought to my attention this morning that a scammer is using my name and location to collect deposits for puppies they do not have.

At this time, we do not have any available
🐶🐾’s, and our next planned group will be late spring.

Please note that Pawmetto Hounds has a three-step approval process, and families must be fully approved before being considered for a puppy. I never request deposits from individuals who have not gone through this process.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me directly through my official Pawmetto Hounds page or website to verify information.

Thank you for helping spread awareness and protect families from scams. 🐾

How to Avoid Puppy Scams

For families searching for a puppy and hoping to avoid falling victim to a scam, the tips below can help guide you through the process with confidence. ♥

If it looks too good to be true — it usually is.

A reputable breeder will care deeply about where their puppies are going. They will ask you questions about your lifestyle, experience, and the forever home you’re providing—not just focus on collecting a payment.

Puppy photos matter.
Legitimate breeders will have consistent photos of the puppies and often pictures of the entire litter together. Puppies should look similar in size and age. Be cautious of listings with many different puppies photographed in different locations. Breeders don’t take puppies to random places to photograph them individually. Always ask for a litter photo.

Check personal social media profiles.
Look at when the person’s page was created. Are there frequent spelling or language inconsistencies? Do they have genuine friends, tagged photos, and a history of posts? Many scammers have likes and followers from multiple countries and very little personal content.

Review business pages carefully.
When was the page created? Has the name been changed? Read reviews and study the photos closely. A legitimate breeder’s page will show consistency over time.

Visit their website if they have one.
Was it recently created? Are there obvious spelling or grammar errors? Poor language and vague information are often red flags that can help distinguish a scammer from a reputable breeder.

Be cautious with money requests.
Scammers often push for payment immediately—sometimes within the first few messages. Most reputable breeders have waiting lists unless puppies were just born and the litter was larger than expected.

FaceTime and phone calls are important.
There is no reason a legitimate breeder wouldn’t be willing to FaceTime or speak on the phone. Scammers commonly claim phone issues, bad signals, or avoid live communication altogether.

Don’t let emotions rush your decision.
Bringing home a puppy is exciting, and it’s easy to fall in love quickly. Take your time, do your research, and trust your instincts.

Ask lots of questions.
Get to know the breeder, their program, and how their puppies are raised before making any commitments.
